- Design and execute experiments to test methane-reducing genetic constructs in plants and microbes
- Work closely with a plant scientist and analytical chemist to establish clear experimental outcomes, with an emphasis on speed and creative approaches to overcoming research bottlenecks
- Analyze data, share results, and prepare high-level recommendations for company leadership
- Participate in meetings with corporate partners, investors, and university collaborators
- Super creative (so important we put it right in the name)
- PhD in relevant field, or equivalent experience; we value nontraditional sources of expertise
- Minimum 5 years experience working with biotech applications in plants, with strong preference for hands-on experience with elite crop varieties
- Documented experience of extreme problem solving and success as a highly independent worker
- Must be or aspire to become an extraordinary science communicator
- On-farm experience in agriculture, or history of climate/conservation work is a strong plus

The single greatest source of ag methane--digestion of feed by livestock--accounts for more global warming than shipping, air travel, and deforestation put together. To solve this problem we need a technology that reaches every corner of the earth quickly and easily. Our answer? Plants. By genetically engineering methane elimination tech into the feed crops that livestock already eat, we make it completely seamless for farmers around the world to eliminate their worst climate pollutant.
Elysia is the only company in the world working directly with the plants that animals eat a billion tons of every year, because we believe this is the way to solve the problem at full scale: 100% enteric methane elimination everywhere on earth. We are building a visionary team that shares our uncompromising goal and isn't afraid to do hard stuff to get there. We are currently seeking a genetic engineer who will help conceptualize and design new products within our pipeline.
Responsibilities
The Genetic Engineer will join Elysia's core team and work closely with in-house scientists, advisors, and outside partners to improve existing technology in our pipeline and design new candidates for testing. The right candidate is both experienced with real-world agricultural biotech applications and highly skilled in genetic design of plants and nonmodel organisms. An important part of this role is participating in site visits and direct conversations with prospective end users of the technology.
Qualifications
As a small and flexible startup, there is potential for the right person to take a leadership role in helping to grow the company in addition to technical expertise. The Genetic Engineer position has some ability to start out as part-time or with especially flexible scheduling for an experienced and independent candidate.
