    Description
    This recruitment is for full-time, non-exempt Deputy Sheriff 1 and Deputy Sheriff positions at the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

    The positions perform law enforcement and crime prevention work:

    enforce state and local laws and traffic regulations, perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Sheriff's Office.

    The positions also preserve the peace, detaining and interviewing violators, apprehend suspects, and respond to assistance calls. The positions can also be responsible for the care and custody of inmates in the Detention Center.


    Deputy Sheriff 1:

    • Must obtain Nevada P.O.S.T. Category I Basic Certificate and/or Nevada P.O.S.T. Category III Basic Certificate within 18 months of employment.
    • Salary: $ $ per hour; $52, $54,949.44 annually

    Deputy Sheriff:

    • Must have Nevada P.O.S.T. Category I Basic Certificate and/or Nevada P.O.S.T. Category III Basic Certificate at the time of hire.
    • Salary: $ $ per hour; $61, $80,963.48 annually


    The recruitment process will include a written test, an oral interview, a physical agility test, a background investigation, a physical and psychological examination, and a Voice Stress Analysis examination.

    The POST Physical Fitness Test consists of the following components:


    • 14 inch vertical jump
    • Illinois Agility Run (19.5 seconds or less)
    • 30 sit ups (1 minute or less)
    • 23 push-ups (no time limit)
    • 300 meter run (68 seconds or less)
    • 1.5 mile run/walk (16:57 minutes: seconds or less)
    An eligibility list is being established with this recruitment.

    All candidates who apply for this position will automatically be placed on an eligibility list for six (6) months, and may be considered for any future vacancies within that time period.

    Examples of Duties

    This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive.

    Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.


    • Assists with the operation of jail facilities including court transportation, classification, booking, release, medical treatment, meals, exercise, personal hygiene, and supervision of inmates while they are incarcerated in the Carson City detention center.
    • Assists and interacts with other Sheriff's Office personnel, other City and outside law enforcement organizations and businesses in order to accomplish tasks; maintains the integrity, professionalism, attitudes, positive values and goals of the Sheriff's Office by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed.
    • Identifies, attends and or conducts training, educational programs and seminars; participates and presents preventive education and information through community and school awareness projects.
    • Patrols and provides security for assigned areas looking for illegal, hazardous and suspicious activities and persons; provides scene security and protection for emergency personnel; operates Office vehicles safely, maintains and cleans Office vehicles; pursue and arrest law violators and criminals.
    • Enforces local, state, and federal laws and enforces compliance with regulations and ordinances; maintains traffic enforcement through traffic stops via warnings and citations; investigates traffic accidents.
    • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service; interrogates suspects, communicates with victims, witnesses and suspects; identifies and collects evidence; completes detailed reports and paperwork using good English grammar and spelling; performs search and surveillance duties.
    • Represents the Office at court hearings and testifies in court cases; serves arrest and search warrants; serves and enforces child and adult orders of protection.


    Pursuant to NRS Chapter 289 (SB 225), applicants for certification as a peace officer are required to swear by affidavit that they 1) are not disqualified from serving as a peace officer, 2) have not been discharged, disciplined or asked to resign from a law enforcement agency due to conduct which would constitute grounds for denial of certification or revoke the certificate of a peace officer or 3) have not resigned from employment with any law enforcement agency while an investigation concerning allegations of conduct which would constitute grounds for denying certification or revoking the certificate of a peace officer, were pending.

    Typical Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


    Education and Experience:
    Equivalent to a high school education or GED; AND successful completion of the Nevada P.O.S.T.

    police training academy at time of hire (Deputy Sheriff); or equivalent to a high school education or GED; and successful completion of the Nevada P.O.S.T.

    police training academy within 18 months of employment (Deputy Sheriff 1).

    In addition, no person may be appointed to perform the duties of a peace officer unless he/she:


    • Has undergone a complete and documented investigation of his/her background which verifies that the person has good moral character and meets the minimum standards established by the Nevada P.O.S.T. Commission;
    • Is a citizen of the United States;
    • Is at least 21 years of age at the time of the appointment;and
    • Has undergone a medical examination performed by a licensed physician who confirms in writing that no physical condition exists which would adversely affect his/her performance of the duties of a peace officer.

    REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

    • Valid driver's license
    • Nevada P.O.S.T. Category 1 certificate (Deputy Sheriff) or Nevada P.O.S.T. Category 1 certificate within 18 months of employment (Deputy Sheriff 1)
    Required Knowledge and Skills


    Knowledge of:

    • Principles and techniques of public relations.
    • City, state, and federal laws, statutes, ordinances and court decisions related to police activities.
    • Principles and practices of effective interrogation.
    • Criminal investigation principles, practices and techniques.
    • Weaponry and associated safety practices.
    • Safety and security policies and procedures.
    • First aid and basic CPR methods.
    • City geography.
    • Personal computers utilizing standard and specialized software applications.
    • Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:


    Under General Supervision - Incumbents at this level are given assignments and objectives that are governed by specifically outlined work methods and a sequence of steps, which are explained in general terms.

    The responsibility for achieving the work objectives, however, rests with a superior.

    Immediate supervision is not consistent, but checks are integrated into work processes and/or reviews are frequent enough to ensure compliance with instructions.

    Traverse difficult terrain, strength and stamina to physically restrain suspects, running, climbing, standing, squatting, and sitting for prolonged periods of time; occasionally lift and carry up to 100 pounds, strength to subdue persons, to drag, carry and lift persons and objects; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone; exposure to traffic conditions and external environment when traveling from one office to another; dexterity to write and to shoot a gun; to be heard in noisy group situation.

    Supplemental Information


    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    • All new employees are at-will and serve a probationary period of twelve (12) months. Such employees are not subject to the collective bargaining agreement and may be laid off or discharged during this period for any reason, or no reason.
    • Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
    • Any City employee may be required to stay at or return to work during emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency.
    • Employees may be required to complete Incident Command System training as a condition of continuing employment.
    • In accordance with NAC , selected candidates will be required to submit to a drug test, truthfulness verification examination, psychological examination and a background investigation. Selected candidates will also be required to pass an extensive medical examination which includes a heart/lung examination required by NAC Chapter 617 prior to being hired as well as after being hired. Candidates invited to submit to each of the above-stated examinations/investigations and who fail any one or all of the examinations/investigations will not be hired and will be removed from the eligibility list. Employment is contingent upon passing each of the investigations/examinations.
    • Carson City participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each applicant's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.
