    Located in Belleville, Clara Maass Medical Center is a facility of RWJBarnabas Health and provides a complete continuum of care to residents of northern New Jersey.

    We are currently looking for a Mental Health Technician to provide patient care services to patients with diverse psychiatric illnesses, under the direction of the Registered Nurse in a safe, therapeutic manner that preserves patient rights, respect and dignity.

    As a member of the multidisciplinary patient care team, the incumbent will also manage the duties below.


    Responsibilities:
    Assists patients with daily living activities (i.e.; 1-to-1 Supervision, Laundry, Bathing, and Toileting).

    Take and record temperature, pulse, respiration, B/P, height/weight and intake/output measurements accurately. Report findings outside of normal range to RN.

    Accurately collects, labels and handles specimens.

    Check assignment sheet before starting assignment. Understand information pertinent to assigned patients. Follow direction for specific patients (example related to dietary requirements/need) and completes assignments.


    Make rounds of all assigned patients before beginning care; observe and report changes in the physical,mental, emotional, behavioral and social status to the Registered Nurse.


    Remain alert and observant to prevent injury or escape, and engage in therapeutic communication and activities to distract, occupy, and develop therapeutic rapport.

    Collect specimens as required using appropriate collection technique and specimen labeling. Always uses 2 patient identifiers.

    Correctly identifies patient by name for any direct care procedures and treatments or diet. Checks patient s name band for correct identification. Assures proper name and that band is secure on patient s wrist.


    Demonstrate competence in performing treatment procedures such as enemas, applications of heat and cold, sitz baths, and special skin care.


    Lift, move, turn and transport patients out of bed, chair, stretcher, wheelchair, portable mechanical lift, etc, maintaining proper body mechanics.


    Perform perineal care, laboratory procedures as noted - EKG s, venipuncture, capillary sampling, glucose monitoring and other laboratory procedures as directed by the RN.


    Provide assistance with the nutritional needs of the patients, including feeding, mealtime assistance/set-up, supplying fluids, refilling water pitchers and delivering supplemental/bedtime snacks.

    Manage patient complaints, problems, and any untoward signs, symptoms or unusual occurrences, and report them immediately to the RN.

    Review and follow patient s care plan to ascertain patient goal.

    Accurately takes and records vital signs (T,P.R, B/P) and weights. Reports vital signs out of normal range to RN.

    Assist with inpatient/family teaching/reinforcement regarding illness, medication, treatments and coping techniques under the supervision of the RN.

    Assists the RN with admission, discharge, and transfer responsibilities as assigned.


    Correctly comply with all national patient safety goals and risk reduction procedures and associated policies as applicable to scope of practice.

    Comply with CMMC policies on confidentiality, infection control, and compassionate care.


    Qualifications:
    High School Diploma or equivalent Required


    Associate s or Bachelor s degree from an accredited college/university in Social work, Psychology, Nursing or Health related field Preferred.

    One (1) year of Nurse Aide/Assistant experience or satisfactory completion of an Aide training program.

    At least one (1) year experience as a phlebotomist or EKG Technician with health care background, preferred.

    Current enrollment in health care training program, preferred.


    One (1) year experience working with geriatric patients preferred; must possess excellent communication, interpersonal and time management skills; and competent in facilitating therapeutic groups under supervision of RN.

    Maintain required BLS Heart Saver/ Health Care Provider course completion and status
