  • Position Summary The Medical Oncology NP/PA works under the clinical supervision of the Medical Oncologists and administrative supervision of the Medical Oncology Clinical Manager. The role builds upon general nurse practitioner training and skill sets by requiring specialty focus in medical oncology services, chemotherapy management, and clinical trial coordination. The NP/PA maintains a case load of patients and bills appropriately for services rendered. Clinical support duties, under the supervision of a Medical Oncologist, include accurate preparation of chemotherapy orders, monitoring and evaluating progress of patients under treatment, rounding on patients, first call triage to appropriate medical coverage, 2nd call critical values, and ongoing monitoring of patients on clinical protocols by working closely with the oncology clinical research coordinator. The NP/PA is expected to stay current with changes in oncology patient evaluation and management, adhere to system best practice guidelines, and respond appropriately and timely to changes in patient clinical status, The NP/PA is required to meet all regulatory and compliance aspects of the role and to participate in quality and revenue cycle improvement activities.
  • Education Master's degree in nurse practitioner or Physicians Assistant - Required
  • Experience 1-2 Years Medical Oncology experience - Preferred
  • License & Certification Professional License with State of Practice - Required ONS Advanced Oncology Certification preferred Advanced Practice RN License required or Physician Assistance License required
  • Core Job Functions Observing Universal Precautions at all times provides clinical assistance to patients, notifies appropriate medical personnel of potential patient crisis situations. Performs E/M professional services under the guidance of physician direction & supervision. Works within the scope of licensure and as directed by oncologist. Appropriately assesses and manages patients; accurately prepares chemotherapy orders, monitors, and evaluates patient progress, promptly responding to changes in patient status. Works under guidance of oncologist. Documents all patient related clinical information and assesses patient for special needs and plans appropriate intervention. Comprehensive review of the patient's medical history is performed and documented. Clinically assesses patients and assures patients have access to clinical support services, clinical trials, and other supportive measures to assure continuity of care. Rounds on inpatients; Serves as first call triage for on-call patient management. Routinely attends available continuing educational programs in order to maintain competencies as an oncology nurse practitioner and stays current with advancements in oncology patient management.
