    Position Description


    This position is located with the Nashville Fire Department (NFD) and assists with administering emergency medical care to injured and the critically ill in an emergency environment or while transporting them to a proper medical facility as a member of an emergency medical team.

    Typical Duties


    • Responds to incidents requiring emergency medical care.
    • Determines the nature and extent of injury or illness.
    • Establishes priority for required emergency care as outlined in state regulations.
    • Renders emergency care.
    • Lifts and moves patients as necessary for treatment and transportation to medical facilities.
    • Operates emergency medical apparatus and equipment.
    • Records patient information and vital signs.
    • Establishes radio communications with hospital emergency department personnel or on-line medical control.
    • Accompanies patient during transport while continuing to monitor and provide care for patient.
    • Maintains inventory of medical equipment and supplies; ensures equipment is working properly.
    • Keeps vehicle clean and in efficient operating condition.
    • Participates in on-going training to improve knowledge and skills.
    Minimum Qualifications

    High School Diploma or equivalent and State of Tennessee license as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician. Must meet National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) medical standards. Must be twenty-one (21) years of age prior to employment.


    LICENSES REQUIRED

    • Valid Driver License
    • Licensed by the State of Tennessee as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician
    FAILURE TO MAINTAIN VALID ADVANCED EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN(AEMT) LICENSE WILL RESULT IN TERMINATION.

    Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


    • Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Tennessee Department of Health, EMS Division
    • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of emergency medical care
    • Thorough knowledge of advanced medical procedures and specialized ambulance equipment
    • Thorough knowledge of emergency medical treatment techniques
    • Knowledge of local streets and hospital locations
    • Knowledge of emergency communications codes and procedures
    • Skill in driving an emergency vehicle
    • Ability to operate all emergency medical and related equipment
    • Ability to diagnose injuries and apply proper medical treatment
    • Ability to serve in a lead/senior capacity over work activities
    • Ability to make quick accurate decisions concerning human life
    • Ability to use emergency physical tasks involved in providing emergency medical care
    • Ability to use emergency medical and rescue equipment two-way radio
