positions within the City and County of Honolulu.
Level I (SR-24)
:
$5,713/month.
Performs a variety of progressively responsible professional veterinary work for the purpose of gaining competence in the care, diagnosis, preventive health and medical treatment of a variety of animals at the Honolulu Zoo; and performs other related duties as required.
Level II (SR-26):
$6,177 - $7,226/month.
Performs journey level professional veterinary work in attending to the overall medical care and treatment of animals at the Honolulu Zoo; participates in the planning, organizing and coordinating of a comprehensive animal medical care program and performs other related duties as required.

There is one (1) vacancy with the Honolulu Zoo,
which may be filled at either the
Zoo Veterinarian I or II level.
Examples of duties of a Zoo Veterinarian I & II, includes but are not limited to the following
:
Plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs a comprehensive animal care program to provide for the well-being of zoo animals including a preventive health program and a program responsive to emergency and episodic animal care;
Coordinates program closely with the Animal Exhibit Branch to ensure that health care requirements for the Zoos animals are met.
Prescribes treatment or care to be implemented in the preventive medicine programs; prescribes regular and special diets for animals;Provides advice to zoo personnel concerning care, feeding, breeding, and housing of zoo animals;
Provides medical treatment and care to injured and ill zoo animals by examining, diagnosing, providing medical care, and prescribing medication and regimen for zoo animals including mammals, reptiles, and birds;
Conducts necropsies (post-mortem examinations) and interprets and reports findings;
Directs development and maintenance of medical records for zoo animals;
Observes animal keeping practices and procedures to ensure compliance with laws and regulations relating to animal care and treatment.
Special Work Requirements
:
Position may be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Exposure to injury or diseases from exotic animals.
On a voluntary basis, serves as a member of the Zoo's Dangerous Animal Response Team and, if the situation dictates, the use of firearms during animal escape emergencies.
May be qualified to possess, carry and/or have access to firearms and ammunition in accordance with applicable State and Federal laws.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
:
Level I & II
:
Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited school of veterinary medicine with a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States.
In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided.We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
:
Level I
:
T wo (2) years of professional veterinary experience involving the care and treatment of injured or ill animals.
Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of
veterinary clinical medicine; veterinary science and its supporting sciences; animal pathology; animal surgery; common symptoms and methods of treating injured or ill animals; practices, methods, tools and equipment utilized in laboratory testing and analysis; post-mortem examinations; vector control principles and practices; and the ability to
learn to diagnose and treat diseases, injuries and illnesses affecting zoo animals; learn pathological disorders common to birds, reptiles and mammals; learn to perform surgery and conduct post-mortem examinations on a variety of zoo animals; learn the principles and practices of exotic animal care and the care, nutrition, breeding, and housing of zoo animals; learn and apply pertinent state and federal laws, rules and regulations governing the care and treatment of animals, including animal quarantine requirements; plan and conduct research on zoo animals; speak and write effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with public and private veterinarians, animal researchers, professionals in other fields, zoo personnel and others; keep abreast of new developments and technology in the care and treatment of zoo animals.
Level II
:
Four (4) years of professional veterinary experience involving the care and treatment of injured or ill animals, two of which shall have been in a zoo or in an exotic animal practice involving the care and treatment of birds, reptiles and mammals.
Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of
veterinary clinical medicine; veterinary science and its supporting sciences; care, nutrition, breeding, and housing of zoo animals; pathological disorders common to birds, reptiles, and mammals; symptoms and methods of treating a variety of diseases and injuries of zoo animals; surgical techniques used on exotic animals; post-mortem examinations; principles and practices of exotic animal care; pertinent state and federal laws, rules and regulations governing the care and treatment of animals, including animal quarantine requirements; vector control principles and practices; and the ability to
diagnose diseases, illnesses and injuries affecting zoo animals; treat animals medically or surgically as appropriate; conduct post-mortem examinations; assist in planning, developing and directing a comprehensive animal health care program to include preventive medicine, emergency care and vector control; apply pertinent state and federal laws, rules and regulations governing the care and treatment of animals, including animal quarantine requirements; plan and conduct animal research; speak and write effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with public and private veterinarians, animal researchers, professionals in other fields, zoo personnel and others; supervise the work of zoo personnel; keep abreast of new developments and technology in the care and treatment of zoo animals.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
1) License to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Hawaii.

Out-of-state applicants must meet the licensing requirements set by the State of Hawaii.
Applicants who are licensed in another state and took the previous national exam (NBE & CCT or NAVLE), will be required to submit documentation for review by the State of Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs' Professional and Vocational Licensing Division.
You must also take a Hawaii State examination in order to be fully licensed. A temporary permit may be available under certain circumstances and will be valid for no longer than eleven months.If selected, you must obtain a license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Hawaii prior to completion of probation.
2) Valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3), prior to appointment.
