    ECU Health Foundation

    East Carolina University ("ECU") and Vidant Health entered into a Joint Operating Agreement on January 1, 2022 to create ECU Health to achieve greater economies of scale, improve the value of care provided, efficiently allocate resources, and facilitate the identification of new strategies to meet the most prevalent health needs for eastern North Carolina.

    To further that work, the ECU Medical & Health Sciences Foundation, Inc. ("MHSF"), and the University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina Foundation, Inc.

    d/b/a Vidant Health Foundation entered into an Agreement, effective January 1, 2023, to align and consolidate fundraising and stewardship operations under the assumed business name of ECU Health Foundation.

    The two foundations along with ECU and ECU Health believe that the consolidated and coordinated philanthropic operations would be best achieved through shared executive leadership such that the President of the ECU Medical & Health Sciences Foundation and the President of Vidant Health Foundation shall be held by the same individual (the Chief Philanthropy Officer of ECU Health Foundation).

    The purpose of the ECU Health Foundation is to give hope to eastern North Carolina and beyond by inspiring philanthropy to improve health, education, and well-being.

    In FY23, the foundation reported total contributions of more than $23.4 million.

    ECU Health

    ECU Health's system of care includes 1,708 beds across an academic medical center with two campuses, affiliated with The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University; seven community hospitals; and numerous outpatient facilities, home health, hospice and wellness centers.

    The system also includes a multi-specialty physician and provider group, offers access to more than 500 providers in 100+ practice locations.

    Health Sciences of ECU

    The colleges and schools on the ECU Health Sciences Campus prepare leaders in the medical, dental, nursing and allied health fields to improve lives and create access to care across our state.

    Laupus Library is also located on the health sciences campus. It is the promise of ECU's Health Sciences to improve the health status of our region and state.

    The campus is a driving force that serves people from the classroom to the clinic-right here in our community, from the mountains to the coast and in some of North Carolina's most rural and underserved areas.

    Position Summary

    As Senior Director, Philanthropy, this person is responsible for overseeing a comprehensive development program focused on fundraising and stewardship activities for Health Sciences at East Carolina University, which includes the Brody School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the College of Allied Health Sciences, the School of Dental Medicine and the Laupus Library.

    These funds raised will provide the needed resources to develop academic excellence that would not be possible on state appropriations alone.

    The Senior Director, Philanthropy will develop an understanding and appreciation for all Health Sciences colleges, schools, and libraries, and give attention to their unique needs and opportunities.

    Reporting to and working in close collaboration with the Chief Philanthropy Officer, the Sr. Director, Philanthropy creates and executes strategy for the ECU Health Foundation This position is responsible for overseeing and participating in all fundraising activities, managing and maintaining a portfolio of donors, philanthropic alignment, leading a professional team of development professionals and helping them reach the Foundation's annual goals while maintaining cost per dollar raised, as well as, being responsible for budget and any other administrative duties as assigned by the Chief Philanthropy Officer

    Responsibilities


    Organizational Management

    Leads, motivates and develops professional team and at times, board members, so that they are passionate about what ECU Health and the health sciences of ECU has achieved and are committed to working effectively toward continual improvement.

    Ensures the team of people this position leads has the skills appropriate to the needs of the positions through management activities, ongoing team development, performance management, compensation and benefits.

    Knowledgeable of, and effectively communicates, policies and procedures to support ECU Health Foundation philanthropy operations including HIPAA/privacy practices, gift acceptances and pledge agreements, naming gifts and recognition policies, and endowment levels.

    Ascertains that employment policies are adhered to in all employment practices and partners with ECU Health to implement changes.

    Also works with the region in helping to incorporate policies and procedures.

    Works with the Chief Philanthropy Officer of ECU Health Foundation to ensure that the Foundation has the appropriate systems, physical space, and technology to operate efficiently and effectively.

    Works with regional Foundations and Development Councils to provide and assist in fundraising and development.


    Development and Fundraising

    Designs, analyzes and advises on strategies to be utilized in direct donor engagement activities, including cultivation, solicitation and closing of charitable gift commitments.

    Develops creative strategies for identifying and engaging diverse constituencies critical to meeting philanthropy team production goals.

    Builds long-term relationships with key donor segments based on mission, cultivation and stewardship, program outcomes and sound fiscal management.

    Assist with the development of communication materials including case statements, collateral materials, and web content.

    Responsible for the representation and communication of ECU Health Foundation's activities and programs to a variety of individuals and groups.



    Strategy and Planning

    Provides leadership and direction for the design and implementation of strategic and operational development tactics that will strengthen ECU Health Foundation's position with past, current and potential donors.

    Assists Chief Philanthropy Officer with collaborative process with the Board of Directors of the Foundation and team that result in the creation of short and long-term goals, objectives, operational plans, and strategic framework; including key performance metrics.

    Responsible for production forecasting and analysis, development of philanthropy objectives and metrics. This includes overseeing prospect identification and research including the tracking of performance metrics for direct reports.

    Assists with development of annual budget for ECU Health Foundation


    Program Development and Implementation

    Oversees and supports the creation, design and delivery of development program initiatives, assuring that the goals and objectives are aligned with ECU Health Foundation's overall strategic plan.

    Oversees and supports the administrative components of all program services, including contract negotiations, contracted work.

    Works collaboratively with the grants team on grant opportunities grant reporting related to programs and services supported by the strategic framework.

    Works collaboratively with ECU University Advancement to ensure coordination of philanthropic projects/activities.

    Continually learn about the programs and services provided by ECU Health and the health sciences of ECU to ensure the Foundation remains aligned to the missions of ECU Health and the health sciences of ECU.


    Minimum Requirements

    Bachelor's Degree required, Master's strongly preferred.


    Minimum of 10 years' experience in a senior level position in the philanthropy field and including some experience in a multi-hospital health system.

    Annual, major and capital campaign experience required. Experience in building, mentoring and motivating a team. Deep understanding of philanthropy operations and administration, including Salesforce and prospect research.

    CFRE is a plus.

    Basic computer skills required. Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills required
