Steel's Environmental Engineers are problem-solvers and contingency planners for every environmental issue involved in the steel manufacturing process. Environmental engineers are responsible for managing and implementing the U.S. Steel Environmental Management System. This position is based at the Edgar Thomson Plant with assignments at other Mon Valley Works plants as required (Clairton, Irvin, & Fairless).

    Responsibilities:
    • Work includes all aspects of compliance with environmental regulations, permits, corporate policies, and legal agreements.
    • Assist the business unit in maintaining compliance with Air, Water, and Waste regulations, Tank Management, Emergency Plans, and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
    • Monitor environmental compliance and assure corrective action of all environmental problems associated with the assigned facility.
    • Knowledge of all applicable Federal, State, and local environmental laws and regulations including ACHD Article XXI air regulations, PA DEP water (industrial discharge and stormwater), waste, and tank regulations, Federal regulations including but not limited to NAAQS, Iron & Steel MACT, and hazardous waste requirements.
    • Conduct periodic audits of environmental facilities to assure compliance and uncover potential problems.
    • Knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
    • Assist facility operators in developing the most expeditious means of determining and correcting environmental problems.
    • Submit required reports (including but not limited to Air Emissions Inventories, Waste reports, DMR's, Act 220, Title V Semiannual and Annual certification, Consent Decree, stack test reports, and NOx and SO2 CEM reports) to agencies including electronic reporting to EPA (CEDRI), DEP (Greenport and OnBase), and ACHD (Regulated Entity Portal).
    • Interact with various Federal, State, and Local regulatory agencies on permitting, compliance, and facility inspections.
    • Lead and interact with local CAP (Community Advisory Panel) and other community leaders.
    • Conduct periodic training classes and other public speaking events such as permit hearings.
    • Participate on or lead multi-disciplinary teams charged with securing environmental permits.
    • Administer the U. S. Steel Safety program to ensure a safe work environment within the assigned facility.
    • Project management and contractor management and supervision including water samplers, air observers, and stack testing companies.
    • Learn and understand the steel manufacturing process.
    Requirements:
    • Bachelor's Degree in: Environmental Engineering/ Science, Chemical Engineering, or Civil Engineering.
    • Preferred candidate will have five or more years of environmental management experience in an industrial setting.
