    Job Description:

    Title: Substitute School Nurse - will be employed on an as needed basis

    Position Purpose:
    • To offer evaluation, strategy, intervention, assessment, counseling, supervision, and/or references related to students' health and medical care needs with the aim of reducing absences due to sickness, maximizing educational chances, and fostering a healthy school environment.

    Essential Functions:
    • Collaborates with healthcare providers, students' parents, school staff, and community organizations to ensure students have continuous access to care.
    • Participates in the establishment and upkeep of a comprehensive school health program.
    • Gathers data about students' health status to comply with state immunization regulations and Board of Education policies.
    • Administers school programs for immunizations, physical exams, and sight and hearing tests.
    • Assesses the health of ill or injured students; applies appropriate practices to provide first aid, nursing care, intervention, and referrals when necessary.
    • Evaluates provided nursing care and adjusts care plans as needed.
    • Enforces Board policies concerning the exclusion and re-entry of students in relation to certain infectious diseases (e.g., Tuberculosis).
    • Maintains accurate records and documentation as per state and federal regulations, and Board of Education policies.
    • Develops individual health care plans (ICHP) when required, outlining specific goals, nursing diagnoses, and interventions tailored to students' needs and for integration into the student's individualized educational plan (IEP).
    • Acts according to the nursing care plan to carry out actions that support, preserve or restore health, prevent illness, and aid in rehabilitation.
    • Participates as a member of school teams in roles such as healthcare professional (e.g., Crisis Teams, PPT, Section 504).
    • Offers guidance, counseling, and health education to students, parents, and staff as needed.
    • Communicates with parents, school staff, physicians, clinics, and others when necessary to meet student health requirements.
    • Delivers training on the Heimlich Maneuver, Blood Borne Pathogen protocols, the school district's Emergency plan, and caring for students, including those with disabilities.
    • Contributes to nursing and school health by introducing new ideas in theory, practice, and engagement in research, which may involve both narrative and statistical reports.
    • Conducts medical assessments for school district employees upon request.
    • Provides health education to students upon request.
    • Reports student injuries/illnesses to the appropriate personnel or agency in compliance with Board policy when needed.
    • Consults with parents, students, school staff, and professionals to interpret health and developmental assessments.

    Additional Duties:
    • Executes any other assigned tasks as directed by supervisors or other administrators.

    Equipment:
    • Utilizes medical equipment to deliver healthcare to students/staff, such as blood glucose monitors, stethoscopes, thermometers, and sphygmomanometers.
    • Operates standard personal computers.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Familiarity with medical terminology, anatomy, symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, first aid, diseases, nutrition, and related fields.
    • Capable of diagnosing and providing care for ill or injured students.
    • Able to communicate relevant medical information effectively to school staff and medical professionals to ensure appropriate school setting care.
    • Competent in basic arithmetic operations needed for the role.
    • Proficient in using personal computers and software applications like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, the Internet, Outlook, and email.
    • Adept at problem-solving job-related issues.
    • Skilled at collaborating with diverse individuals and students with special requirements.
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from superiors, administrators, physicians, and to coordinate tasks with principals, teachers, and others.
    • Can clearly describe school health services provided, along with related issues and concerns.
    • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with students, staff, and other contacts.

    Safety Requirements:
    • Adheres to professional safety standards and practices in the nursing domain, following federal and state laws, and Occupational Safety and Health regulations.
    • Implements Board Policy regarding Blood Borne Pathogens and other relevant policies concerning medical care for employees and students.

    Travel Requirements:
    • May need to travel frequently between different school locations.

    Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:
    • Operates in a standard school building environment.
    • Exposure to body secretions, bloodborne pathogens, medicines, medical supplies, illnesses, and diseases.

    Qualifications Profile:
    • An suitable blend of education, licenses, certifications, and experience providing the necessary skills and knowledge for successful job performance would qualify. Common qualifications would be:
    • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related scientific field, with relevant coursework in growth and development, health assessment, public or school health, crisis intervention, and health education.
    • Preferably a Master's degree in a related field.
    • Must meet the qualifications of a school nurse as outlined in state regulations.
    • Prior successful experiences working with the pediatric population, preferably in a community or school environment, are advantageous.

    License or Certificate:
    • Registered professional nurse, holding an R.N. designation as defined by state law, and currently licensed in the state.
    • Current certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
