Duration: 7 Months

Job Description:

The Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology (DHPA), the Indiana state historic preservation office (SHPO), is looking for contract architectural field surveyors for work in and around central Indiana. The ideal surveyor would work full time (40 hours/week) with flexible hours to suit the right candidate's schedule. Work is expected to commence in late April 2024.
Surveyors will receive training in the Indianapolis office before starting fieldwork, which will be supervised initially by the Survey Coordinator and experienced field surveyors.

Overview

The DHPA was the first SHPO in the country to complete a comprehensive architectural survey of the entire state and its above-ground cultural resources. This role is pivotal for the second phase of the survey, involving systematically driving through every road in the respective county to document and assess buildings, bridges, and cemeteries that are at least 40 years old or older, following criteria outlined in the DHPA Survey Manual.
The work will predominantly take place in rural, suburban, or urban areas of Indiana, with some indoor opportunities for research, writing, or editing tasks.

Required Skills

-Reliable vehicle and valid driver's license

-Ability to navigate various terrains in all four seasons of Indiana weather

-Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and digital photography

Physical Requirements

This role involves driving long distances in all weather conditions and walking frequently on various terrains. It necessitates carrying equipment such as tablet computers and other resources weighing approximately 20 lbs or less. Additionally, indoor activities like sitting and typing are required.

Successful Candidate Qualifications

Hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in relevant fields like history, historic preservation, or architectural history
Quickly and accurately identify vernacular types and architectural styles in Indiana
Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
Demonstrate self-motivation, organization, and the ability to excel independently
Show flexibility and adaptability to varying work environments and weather conditions
Capable of planning work efficiently to meet deadlines and metrics
Experience in research and summarizing data into reports is advantageous

A typical day

Conduct surveys both outdoors - collecting data using tablets on buildings, cemeteries, and more, and indoors - researching, writing histories, and editing records
Explore a wide range of architecture styles from different eras and share interesting findings
Enhance knowledge about Indiana's architecture, discover historic places, and become well-versed in local trivia

Personal Work Relationships

The field surveyor works independently but collaborates with fellow surveyors and supervisors to ensure accuracy and timeliness of survey activities
Interaction with local entities and the public to explain survey processes positively
Maintain professional conduct as a representative of the State government

Responsibilities

Receive instructions from the survey coordinator, work within established guidelines, and submit work regularly for review
Maintain accurate data records and behave professionally in the role
Handle equipment responsibly and ensure safety in all activities
