    About This Role

    Biogen is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a Scientist II position within its Analytical Development organization. This individual will be an analytical scientist responsible for method development, drug characterization, and conducting experiments and investigations to support the development of small molecule pharmaceuticals from pre-clinical development through commercialization. Responsibilities include program representation and contributing to regulatory activities. The successful candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment to utilize their skills in partnership with internal and external experts to solve complex analytical challenges. This position is for an individual contributor with no direct reports.

    This is an on-site role to be based at our Headquarters in Cambridge, MA.

    What You'll Do

    • Employ design thinking to solve problems, which includes risk identification, design of experiments, generation of a test plan, following good documentation practices, and effectively communicating results to management.
    • Develop and qualify analytical methods and characterizing pharmaceutical drug candidates under development.
    • Represent the analytical function on cross-functional CMC teams for the development of control strategies for pharmaceutical drug candidates.
    • Contribute to the development of analytical control strategies for the program during early- and late-stage development, and author technical reports to support regulatory filings.
    • Effective at working within a matrix organization, meaning that they contribute to, or lead, working teams to solve problems.

    You have excellent technical skills, the ability to think outside of the box, a desire to bring new capabilities to fill gaps in the organization, and the ability to drive experiments from proof of concept to implementation. You should be able to clearly communicate your results and accomplishments to a broad audience at team meetings and in written reports. Strong self-motivation and drive to make impactful contributions in a fast-paced environment is critical. You will be expected to play leading and supporting roles in different areas as needed, and to collaborate and matrix manage resources within the team to maximize efficiency and impact.

    Required Skills:

    • PhD in analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences or related discipline with 0-4 years of experience (May/June graduates may also be considered). Equivalent experience equals a Master's degree and 6 years of experience or a Bachelor's degree and at least 8 years of experience.
    • In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with different types of analytical techniques for small molecule drug substance (DS) and drug product (DP) analysis, such as LC, GC, dissolution, MS, NMR, etc.
    • Demonstrated track record with supporting DS and DP development
    • Ability to develop and qualify new analytical methods relevant to pharmaceutical materials characterization.
    • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, capabilities in experimental design and execution, as well as the ability to work independently.
    • Exercises good time management and prioritization skills and can successfully manage multiple workstreams simultaneously.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to serve as a team member/leader in an environment where individual initiative, collaboration and accountability are valued.
    • Knowledge in other characterization techniques such as KF, Raman, IR, XRPD, etc.
    • Knowledge in related fields, such as organic chemistry, solid-state chemistry, spectroscopy, pharmaceutical sciences, chemical engineering, and manufacturing is a plus.
