- Analyzing spatial data through the use of ArcGIS mapping software.
- Discovering patterns and trends through spatial mapping of data.
- Designing digital maps with geographic data and other data sources.
- Creating "shapefiles" to merge topographical data with external data by layering external data over a topographical map.
- Producing maps showing the spatial distribution of various kinds of data, including crime statistics,
- defense contractors, and NCIS personnel and facility locations.
- Developing mapping applications and tools.
- Performing data munging and cleaning to convert data into its desired form.
- Produce reports on geographic data utilizing data visualizations.
- Managing a digital library of geographic maps in various file types.
- Maintain Geographical Library.
- Manipulate data for reports.
- Mine data sources to create GIS layers.
- Conduct analysis to compare and contrast GIS data to determine overlaps, gaps, intersections, etc. GIS Analyst Skills and Qualifications
- Analytical thinking - GIS analysts analyze data based on certain criteria and use that knowledge to generate reports for use in other projects.
- Computer knowledge - GIS analysts use databases and computer programs on a regular basis, so good computer skills are a must.
- Writing - this job requires the ability to create well written and detailed reports, so it's important that applicants for this job have strong writing skills.
- Problem-solving skills - GIS analysts solve technical problems and use statistical knowledge to spot trends and find errors, so troubleshooting and problem-solving are key parts of this job.
- Mathematics - a large proportion of this job is analyzing data, statistics, and patterns in numerical information, so GIS analysts must be good with numbers
- Extensive experience with ArcGIS.
