This position will be responsible for both research and applied work in cognitive human factors engineering (HFE).

A key skill is independently performing cognitive systems analysis and applying sound research techniques to produce reports, papers and design innovations.

The preferred candidate will have research experience, be able to perform knowledge elicitation, apply statistical theory and write up the results that can be used in industry papers and applied design.

Our customer is the Department of Defense (DoD), so experience working with the DoD or foreign defense ministries is desired.

Experience developing strategies for human to artificial intelligence (AI) teaming is of particular value.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in human centered design (HCD) of graphical user interfaces, conducting user research, developing user flows, prototyping, user testing and optimization.

This position requires the following traits:

    • Effectively communicate design solutions to engineers and stakeholders
    • Business know-how: Understanding business metrics and the ability to translate company goals and objectives into digital experiences
    • Understanding of User Experience (UX) Research methodologies - e.g. interviews, surveys, usability testing, field trials - and how they fit into a full HCD process
    • Hands-on experience moderating such studies would be helpful
    • A self-starter who is not afraid to engage stakeholders and other engineers in a collaborative, ethical, and respectful way
    • Great influencing skills, including the ability to evangelize HCD to stakeholders
    • A great team player, able to work well as part of a small UX team and collaborate closely with Product Managers, Business Analysts and Technical Developers
    • Motivated to both give and receive constructive criticism on UX designs
    Basic Qualifications

    • 3+ years performing cognitive task analysis or related methodologies to elicit user knowledge as part of an HCD process.
    • Master's degree in Psychology, Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design or a related, relevant field
    • Understanding of UX Research methodologies - e.g. interviews, surveys, usability testing, field trials - and how they fit into a full HCD process.
    Desired skills

    • Experience using interactive prototyping tools (e.g. Adobe XD) and 'static' UX Design tools (e.g. Balsamiq)
    • Experience working with a Department of Defense (DoD) customer
    • Experience designing in an Agile Methodology
    • Exceptional communication and teaming skills enabling candidate to work in a fast-paced design environment
    • Experience combining UX thinking with design execution to produce usable and intuitive user interfaces within a tight timetable following an Agile design methodology
    • Research experience in the Human-AI teaming domain
    • Experience leading research projects
    • Published research author in cognitive HFE
