    Position Highlights

    The College of Medicine - Tucson (COM-T) is inviting applications from innovative basic and translational scientists to serve as head of the college's Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. This department houses a diverse group of excellent faculty with a ranking of #5 nationally by the Blue Ridge Rankings for Cell Biology/Anatomy departments within Schools of Medicine. Reporting directly to Dean Michael M.I. Abecassis, the department head will work collaboratively with the leaders of COM-T to build upon excellence in existing teaching and team-based research programs to position the department for further growth and transformation. The incumbent will provide strategic leadership and direction for the growth of the research and teaching enterprise. The department head will evaluate and leverage department strengths to expand the UArizona footprint, expand relationships and partnerships with community providers, recruit and retain talented faculty. The department head will be responsible for research advancement and teaching excellence of the department and the enhancement of the national reputation. The department head will also focus on efforts to expand and optimize use of existing space, foster philanthropic development, and manage resources across the enterprise. This leader will provide strategic and tactical leadership for all aspects of the department within the College of Medicine - Tucson.

    Duties & Responsibilities
    • Work closely with leadership to develop, execute, and refresh a strategic plan and direction that fosters the mission, goals, and objectives of the University of Arizona, in concert with its strategic direction.
    • Facilitate an environment of collaborative research conducive to program grant activity.
    • Maintain records of accomplishments to facilitate acquisition of external funding and addressing budget priorities within the department.
    • Use the COM-T Strategic Planning eSubmission and eReporting Dashboard (SPEED) to assist recruitment priorities and growth decisions.
    • Provide oversight for the education mission including educating graduates who are well prepared to be productive in a modern research setting, business setting, graduate school, undergraduate education, medical, and other professional schools.
    • Review and report on faculty performance annually.
    • Maintain an inclusive, positive workplace environment.
    • Lead the department in achieving student and faculty recruitment and retention goals.
    • Oversee the department's operations, including budgets, resources, and fiscal management.
    • Facilitate faculty teaching and mentoring in research.
    • Support inclusive excellence, diversity, and equity across the department.
    • Continue independent and collaborative research in line with the goals of the department.
    • Publish in peer-reviewed literature as an author and co-author.
    • Provide oversight for the educational portfolio of the department.
    • Prepare documents for a 7-year review.
    • Assist with COM-T executive recruitments.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Demonstrated ability to build and lead teams, and to develop strong ties and connections with external constituencies and individuals.
    Minimum Qualifications
    • A PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent medical degrees.
    • Meet University of Arizona criteria for appointment to a tenured senior-level faculty position, including a successful track record of NIH or NSF funding.
    • Scholarly achievement, including a significant record of papers published in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals and history of successful research funding.
    • Strong and effective communication and mentoring skills that is driven by transparency.
    • Commitment to an inclusive departmental culture focused on team building and vision.
    • Proven and substantial leadership experience in an academic environment.
    Preferred Qualifications

    • National/international reputation as a respected and accomplished researcher and educator.

    • Administrative experience as head or associate head, center director, or equivalent leadership position.

    • Membership on boards of academic journals and/or professional associations.

    • Commitment to participatory decision making.

    • Demonstrated record of engagement with equity issues and diverse faculty, staff and student communities.

    • Track record as a creative and strategic thinker to envision and manage for the future.
