    POSITION: CHIEF I DAY CUSTODIAN LOCATION: Christiana High School
    HOURS: 6 am - 2 pm CLOSING DATE: March 19, 2026
    BASIC FUNCTION: Provide leadership, as directed by building principal, in providing for optimum custodial services in the building, including direction of the custodial staff and a share of custodial duties. The nature of this position is that of a working supervisor. Hours of work may be varied on day shift depending on availability and competency of custodian/fireman in the building. (Transition on a phased in basis.)
    RELATIONSHIP: The chief custodian shall have direct authority over the custodians in his/her school. The chief custodian is directly responsible to the Facilities Point of Contact or the building principal or their designee.
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Physical ability to perform duties
    • Neat and clean appearance
    • Able to get along with adults and students
    • Good moral character, honest, dependable and courteous
    • Ability to read basic operating instructions, write reports and maintain written records
    • Supervise the operation and maintenance of low pressure boilers and oil fired boilers
    • Must hold a chief custodian certificate (120 hours), or must hold a custodian-fireman certificate (90 hours) and be in the process of obtaining the chief custodian certificate (120 hours) within the current fiscal year.
    • Prefer six (6) years of successful experience as a custodian/fireman and/or chief custodian or the equivalent in custodial and/or maintenance supervisory experience in other institutions or firms
    • Ability to operate computerized energy management system
    • Must have satisfactory evaluations, experience, attendance record and seniority
    • Minimum lifting requirements - 50 pounds (with assistance)

    CHIEF CUSTODIAN I
    DUTIES:
    • Supervises all custodians assigned to the building.
    • Performs limited preventative maintenance and mechanical work as required.
    • Performs annual evaluations of all custodians in the building.
    • Maintains a written housecleaning and maintenance schedule.
    • Makes inspections to insure that housecleaning and maintenance schedules are performed on the day and night shifts.
    • Trains all new custodians under his supervision.
    • Checks all fire and safety equipment in the school and submits reports to proper school official.
    • Maintains proper heating and cooling conditions in compliance with energy management standards.
    • Updates continuously his working knowledge of systems and equipment in his building.
    • Maintains records for preventative maintenance of motors, equipment, vehicles, and gasoline-powered equipment.
    • Keeps a running inventory of custodial supplies and submits requisitions replenishing supplies to proper school official.
    • Performs custodial duties when required in emergencies such as snow removal, flooding conditions (burst pipe), etc.
    • Has ultimate responsibility for school building on weekends and holidays with respect to the operation of mechanical equipment and security of the building.
    • Has ultimate responsibility for the security of the building especially on weekends and holidays with respect to the operation of safety and mechanical equipment.
