    Job Summary:
    Maintains responsibility for ensuring the effectiveness and efficiency of all Histology and Cytology operations for the assigned region. Is accountable for supervision of laboratory personnel in the performance of anatomic pathology.

    Is responsible for the maintenance of departmental budgets, development, review and revision of policies and procedures, quality improvement, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory bodies e.g., College of American Pathologists (CAP), state, federal and joint commission.

    Supervises and directs the activities of various levels of assigned personnel using both professional and supervisory discretion and independent judgment.


    Job Requirements:

    Education and Work Experience:

    • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Required
    • Master's Degree: Preferred
    • Five years' technical experience: Preferred
    • One year's leadership experience: Preferred
    • Anatomic Pathology experience in a laboratory: Preferred

    Licenses/Certifications:

    • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) licensure in the state of practice: Preferred
    • Medical Technologist (MT) certification: Preferred
    • Valid Driver's License (DL) and must be at least 21 years of age or older: Required

    Essential Functions:

    • Manages daily operations for area of responsibility. Serves as technical consultant and mentor, manages and monitors regional histology and cytology staff and coordinates department scheduling. Manages hiring, oversees new-hire orientation and administers employee evaluations. Identifies staff education and competency needs and oversees training programs on instrumentation, technology, and procedure as needed. Evaluates and assess department staff competency and performance. Develops and implements plan of action if required.
    • Aligns and standardizes all departmental laboratory policy and procedure manuals within the region. Performs occasional patient sample testing and conducts spot reviews of testing results for quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA). Maintains quality standards for media, reagents and organisms and for proficiency testing and instruments. Supervisors on current and future financial challenges; working closely with Finance to ensure that the proper billing, accounting, auditing, CPT coding, Medicare/Medicaid billing procedures and protocols are followed.
    • Ensures smooth operation of the laboratory's testing, reporting and billing for the regions consolidated Labs including inpatient, outpatient and outreach clients. Works closely with Pathologists, Directors, Laboratory Managers and supervisory staff in developing, updating and monitoring the achievement of long range goals and objectives for Regions Consolidated Labs. Continually evaluations new procedures, equipment and innovations for possible implementation. Develops and monitors department goals and regularly reviews action items.
    • Ensures compliance with rules, regulations and accreditation requirements of regulatory agencies, including Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), College of American Pathologists (CAP), Joint Commission (JC), AABB, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Ensures any identified regulatory or accreditation deficiencies are corrected in a timely and accurate manner. Performs and reports Quality Assurance studies, delegating duties as necessary. Works with management team and medical leadership to ensure that the specialty areas are in compliance with regulatory and licensing agencies.
    • Oversees the financial aspects of the laboratory, including coordinating and preparing the capital and operational budgets; monitoring and investigating monthly budget variances; preparing and reporting internal and peer comparison financial and performance indicators; maintaining the charge description master; collaborating closely with the Laboratory Directors. Maintains supplies and equipment at adequate level for optimum patient care.
    • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
