    JOB TITLE: SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER

    JOB SUMMARY: The school social worker will provide evaluation, direct service, and consultation to special education eligible students and their families. The individual must demonstrate excellent communication skills as well as possess extensive therapeutic and consultative experience with children throughout the pre-k - 12th grade age range. The professional will provide support activities for small groups and individual students, meet with parents and staff, and act as a resource liaison.

    MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS:
    • MSW or LMSW degree with approval from the State of Michigan as a School Social Worker.
    • Experience and knowledge of children from early intervention through high school age.
    • Experience in setting up and running support groups for students and parents.
    • Experience in the design and implementation of behavior management plans for home and school settings.
    • Experience in delivering service in individual, small group, and classroom settings.
    • Knowledge of community resources and referral procedures.
    • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with staff and parents in home and school settings.
    • Knowledge of the workings of a school environment including an understanding of Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education and IDEIA.
    • Ability to work cooperatively in Student Support Team meetings, team evaluations, and IEPT meetings.
    • Experience in the IEPT process as it relates to children from early intervention to 26.
    • Ability to complete and maintain required records, forms, and reports in a professional and timely manner.
    • Ability to be flexible, to work independently, and to contribute as a member of a team.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks, allocate time, and work a flex schedule as needed.
    MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (May include but not be limited to):
    • Evaluate children for eligibility for special education services using a variety of appropriate testing instruments.
    • Consult with instructional and administrative staff as well as parents to communicate test results, program recommendations, and recommended teaching strategies.
    • Serve as a liaison to buildings to communicate referral status and needs within a building.
    • Participate in Student Support teams as needed
    • Work as a member of a diagnostic team; communicate regularly with team members to plan for students.
    • Schedule IEPT meetings in a timely manner; chair IEPT meetings, including preparation of paperwork.
    • Communicate and coordinate services with local agencies.
    • Provide therapeutic interventions to students individually or in a group.
    • Intervene in crisis situations as needed by the crisis intervention team or administration.
    • Provide small group counseling in support of conflict resolution, peer mediation, and self-esteem.
    • Establish a parent support component with home visits as needed.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Special Services Director.
