    24/25 Middle School Visual Arts Teacher

    Reports To: Glenn Delaney, Middle School Head of School; Arts Department Chair

    Work Schedule: Regular, Full-Time Teaching Schedule

    Position Summary

    Heathwood Hall Episcopal School seeks a dynamic, energetic, and experienced visual arts teacher to instruct 5th-8th grade students in a variety of artistic media. This individual will inherit a strong middle school curriculum while being empowered to further develop courses that both advance the school's curricular goals and emphasize the teacher's talents and passions. In addition to teaching visual arts, this individual will also be a member of the Middle School faculty and will participate in the life of the school as an Advisor and member of a grade-level team.     Essential Functions

    • Teach middle school art electives for 5th-8th graders.
    • Design developmentally appropriate curriculum, develop a well-articulated plan of teaching and assessment, and create an engaging classroom environment that supports student learning.
    • Maintain the physical space of the Middle School art room and collaborate with the Arts Department chair and the Middle School Head to budget for and acquire necessary materials, supplies, and equipment.
    • Collaborate with colleagues to plan and execute exhibitions, performances, etc.
    • Display student work in various spaces on campus.
    • Proactively communicate with students, parents, and other faculty members about student performance and behavior.
    • Participate in parent-teacher conferences as necessary.
    • Write individualized progress reports/report card comments for students at required periods during the year.
    • Serve as an advisor and complete all activities and assignments related to this role (e.g. communicating with parents and other faculty members about student progress, leading parent conferences, participating in facilitation of advisory activities on mindfulness, digital citizenship, executive functioning skills, chaperoning a class trip, etc.)
    • Pursue professional development opportunities.
    • Attend and support after-school activities and programs (e.g. concerts, theater, and class programs).
    • Attend regular faculty and department meetings.
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Middle School and across divisions.
    • Complete required training each year (CPR, first aid, mandatory reporting, handling of hazardous materials, etc.)

    Specific Job Skills

    The ideal candidate will:

    • Be proficient in a variety of artistic media
    • Have experience and expertise that includes instruction of some combination of: drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, digital arts, etc.
    • Have the skill to design and assemble displays of student artwork in various spaces on campus
    • Create an inclusive, welcoming classroom environment that offers all students the opportunity to be supported and successful
    • Be enthusiastic about working with middle school students from a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of skill levels as artists
    • Be skilled in classroom management
    • Support the school by upholding policies and procedures as outlined in the school's handbooks
    • Collaborate effectively with an Arts Department that includes middle and high school teachers who instruct visual arts, drama, chorus, technology, and band
    • Support the School's Episcopal identity and practices

    Education and Experience

    • Bachelor's degree in a related field required; master's degree preferred
    • Teaching experience required; experience working with middle school students preferred
    • Proficiency in instruction of visual arts in a variety of media is required

    Working Conditions

    • Primarily indoor classroom teaching with occasional field trips. Some evening and weekend commitments.
    • Must be able to lift up to 15lbs
    • The school campus requires the ability to walk moderate distances and may require prolonged periods of sitting, standing, or working on a computer
