CockroachDB Senior Engineer
Location:
Sunnyvale, CA / Austin, TX (Onsite from Day 1)
Employment Type:
Full-Time (FTE – Permanent)
Key Responsibilities:
Design, deploy, manage, and scale multi-region CockroachDB (CRDB) clusters in production environments
Ensure high availability, fault tolerance, and strong data consistency across globally distributed clusters
Monitor cluster health, latency, replication, and resource utilization using observability tools
Lead capacity planning and proactive scaling strategies
Troubleshoot complex issues including node failures, network partitions, range/leaseholder imbalance, replication lag, hotspotting, and performance bottlenecks
Architect and implement disaster recovery strategies (multi-region, backup/restore, failover/fallback)
Manage and test backup, restore, and point-in-time recovery (PITR) processes
Automate provisioning, scaling, patching, and rolling upgrades with minimal downtime
Optimize SQL performance and schema design for high-throughput systems
Develop operational runbooks, SOPs, and on-call playbooks
Participate in production on-call rotations and incident response
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Overall IT Experience: 9-12+ Years
7+ years of experience in database engineering/administration, with strong hands-on expertise in CockroachDB or other distributed SQL databases
Deep understanding of distributed systems concepts (consensus, replication, consistency models, sharding)
Strong SQL performance tuning and schema optimization skills
Experience with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP) and containerized environments (Kubernetes preferred)
Proficiency in automation using Terraform, Ansible, or similar Infrastructure-as-Code tools
Strong knowledge of Linux systems, networking, and troubleshooting production environments
Experience with monitoring/observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, etc.)
Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to handle high-severity production incidents
Strong communication skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams
