    Job Description
    Horn Point Laboratory is a premier marine research and education institution located in Cambridge on the Maryland Eastern Shore.


    HPL
    is one of several units of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science.

    The Assistant Director for Outreach and Development will work with the Director in expanding the laboratory's philanthropic support and community engagement.

    The Assistant Director will lead fundraising, marketing and public communication efforts to elevate and diversify HPL's community support and funding base through the identification and cultivation of corporate, foundation and individual donors.

    The Assistant Director will assist the Director and staff in expanding the laboratory's public outreach and education. This is accomplished through managing community events and public tours, developing partnerships with environmental non-profit groups.


    HPL


    has developed a robust donor base and strives to retain and expand upon this essential resource with leadership from the Assistant Director.

    fundraising. The position is based at Horn Point Laboratory in Cambridge, MD. Some limited telework is negotiable, although the majority of workdays will be in the office.

    Job Duties

    • Write news articles about research, education and policy issues for our regular newsletter
    • Supervise an assistant who manages weekly summer lab tours and assists with other duties as
    assigned

    • Maintain correspondence with donors via the annual appeal
    • Work with faculty and staff to plan and execute the annual Horn Point Open House
    • Plan and execute special community events such as science talks by faculty and students and donor events
    • Participate with new student and staff onboarding.
    • Track and maintain a list of Horn Point donors.
    Minimum Qualifications

    • A minimum of three years of successful development and outreach experience
    • Excellent oral and writing communications skills
    • The ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for work-related activities and events
    • Experience working in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office
    • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
    • Ability to work with a wide variety of constituencies including students, staff, faculty and administrative leadership
    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with the software Constant Contact, Canva or Adobe and donor management databases.
    • Experience working in a non-profit or academic institution
    • Experience with social media administration
