    JOB DESCRIPTION

    TITLE:

    SCHOOL NURSE

    REPORTS TO:
    ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT (PERSONNEL)


    JOB GOAL:
    OPERATE AND MANAGE A WELL ORGANIZED SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM WILL REFLECT ESTABLISHED MEDICAL AND HEALTH PRACTICES.


    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. The school nurse will adhere to all local, state and federal regulations.
    2. They will adhere to all rules and regulations set forth by the Poplar Bluff Board of Education.
    3. They must possess the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff
    and members of the medical profession.
    4. They shall be a registered nurse and/or a licensed practical nurse, certified by the State of
    Missouri.
    5. Must have a mature outlook and a responsible attitude.
    6. The ability to remain calm and work effectively in stress situations.
    7. Understands youth in relation to their physical and emotional health.
    8. Must understand the school health program in relation to the total educational program.
    9. It must be understood that one school nurse may be designated as head nurse for administrative
    purposes.
    10. Schedules of school nurses are to be filed with the Assistant Superintendent (Personnel)
    and with building principals.
    11. Emergency or special assignments take precedence over regular schedules.


    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. Provide emergency first aid.
    2. Identification of health problems, recommending or executing appropriate action or making an
    appropriate referral.
    3. Maintain necessary records.
    4. Ordering of necessary supplies.
    5. Maintaining a health room in each school building.
    6. Conduct and assist with special health projects, such as immunization programs and annual
    visual and hearing screening.
    7. Inform students and parents on health problems and treatment sources.
    8. Be especially alert for contagious health problems and recommend corrective measures to the
    administration.
    9. Maintain current knowledge and expertise.
    10. Maintain confidentiality regarding privileged information related to students and parents.
    11. Be particularly cognizant of the ethics involved in the health profession.
    12. Serve as a resource for health related information and education.
    13. Design and implement the district's health curriculum.
    14. Provide classroom instruction on health or health-related topics.
    15. Assist teachers with individual student health related problems.
    16. Perform other duties as assigned.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
    1. Be physically mobile and have current driver's license in State of Missouri. Have a vehicle
    available to travel between schools as scheduled or when called.
    2. Be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
    3. Be able to read a glass thermometer, read and hear blood pressure manometer, measure height
    and weight, and to screen for head lice.
    4. Be able to read and chart on student health records.
    5. Be able to carry approximately 25 lbs. and operate knowledgeably instruments used for
    screenings. Be able to carry instruments to and from car to the school and up and down
    several flights of stairs.
    6. Have the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and members of the
    medical profession.
    7. Have at least 1 year working experience in hospital setting and/or doctor's office.
    8. Be able to teach in classroom setting and make presentations to students regarding health
    related issues.
