    English Teacher

    Bachelor's degree or equivalent is required. Candidates should have a minimum of two years' experience, preferably in a formal middle or high school setting.

    Candidates must demonstrate an enduring love of youth, a love of teaching and learning, and a desire to work in a faith-based atmosphere that is aligned with values taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

    Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of principle-based teaching in History, Geography, Literature, and Language Arts. Successful candidates should know much about English (especially composition instruction), history, and the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.

    A teaching demonstration will be required of top candidates. The successful candidates will demonstrate excellent, engaging pedagogy.

    Other requirements:

    • ability to tell accurate stories from English literature and history and lead inspiring discussions.
    • ability to teach writing well.
    • broad knowledge and deep intelligence about each subject matters taught so that students become interested in the details and relevance of each subject; students will draw deeply on the teacher as a source of inspiration, wisdom, and relevance.
    • ability to distill knowledge into concepts and principles (statements of truth that can readily be applied to a wide variety of circumstances).
    • strong oral skills, including the ability to present information in an engaging, way with pacing that moves quickly and doesn't drag.
    • strong written communication skills, including the ability to create and post assignments with clear instructions, models, and rubrics.
    • strong classroom management skills, including the ability to stay organized and create routines that are purposeful and effectively implemented.
    • a habit of communicating with employees and parents in timely, collaborative, precise, helpful, positive ways.
    • experience in preparing and facilitating daily lesson plans.
    • experience establishing and communicating clear learning objectives to students and parents.
    • ability to use a variety of pedagogical methods that engage students in active reasoning and relating.
    • experience monitoring and reporting progress to parents.
    • Special education training in teaching students with specific learning disabilities is helpful, but is not required.

    Candidates should be professional in appearance and demeanor. They should be willing to uphold and serve as ambassadors for the AHS Mission, Honor Code, and Diversity Statement on and off-campus.

    Position is available beginning in the school year.

    Location of position is 142 W. 200 N., Salt Lake City, Utah.
