    Job Title: Controller

    Role Summary: The controller is a member of the Leadership Team and plays a crucial role in ensuring the financial health and accuracy of all managed properties, the parent organization, and the execution of the organization's strategic plans.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    · Leadership: Must be accountable and take ownership of managing duties, deadline deliverables and people for the accounting department. Be the sole leader of accounting and finance that reports on the leadership team.

    · Financial Reporting: ensure financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements are prepared correctly and adhere to accounting standards.

    · Month-end Close: Supervise in-person and remote team members to ensure all properties' bank accounts are reconciled by the 12th of the month and reports are delivered to owners by the 15th of each month without exception.

    · General Accounting Oversight: Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and other financial transactions. Monitor that critical payables such as mortgages, insurance and property taxes are paid on time. Approve payables. Post Journal entries as needed.

    · Process Review and Improvement: Must have strong drive to review existing accounting processes with the organization. Identify areas for improvement, recommend changes, and implement new procedures to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

    · Onboarding of properties: Assist with, and manage delegation of, all financial tasks necessary to onboard new accounts that occur monthly.

    · Budgeting and Forecasting: Assist management in financial budgeting and forecasting including analyzing historical data, predicting future financial trends, and providing insights to guide decision making.

    · Compliance: Ensure compliance with all accounting standards and regulations, including adherence to governmental, financial, and tax regulations. They also comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

    · Non-routine Transactions: Advise staff on handling complex financial events such as acquisitions, refinances, property sales or other unique situations.

    · Supervision: Ensure department meets stringent deadlines by overseeing accounting operations and assisting as needed. Hire, train and mentor accounting and admin staff including several remote assistants to keep up with the rapidly growing needs of the company. Demonstrate a strong ability to systematize and delegate.

    o Supervise accounting staff, including several remote virtual assistants, and delegate/manage routine tasks.

    · Financial Analysis: Assess cash flow statements, balance sheets, tenant & vendor ledgers. Analyze variances between budgeted and actual results and review overhead costs. Provide detailed financial analysis and commentary to management.

    Attributes

    · Self-motivated and accountable.

    · Deep understanding of financial concepts

    · Eagerness to delegate, train, and support staff in a high-volume environment.

    · Ability to prioritize and manage time efficiently.

    Technical Skills:

    · IT Skills: highly proficient in Microsoft Excel. Proficient in Microsoft Office.

    · Must be a quick learner with new software and technology solutions.

    · Must be able to effectively operate in a remote environment as well as in person. Many support accounting staff work remotely.

    · Several years' experience with multifamily property management software is required. Appfolio is a plus.

    Working Conditions:

    · Long hours at a desk and computer.

    · Weekly leadership meetings. Daily check-ins with support staff.

    · Tight deadlines with periodic long hours.

    Qualifications:

    · Degree in Accounting

    · Proficient in GAAP accounting

    · 5-7 years of accounting experience and a minimum of 3 years in a leadership role accountable for a team

    · Multifamily property management accounting experience is required.

    · Multifamily management software experience is required. Appfolio experience is a strong plus.

    · CPA preferred but not required.
