    About the Team

    Banning Lewis Academy is seeking a highly-qualified Director of Safety and Security in Colorado Springs, CO in our upcoming school year

    At Banning Lewis Ranch, we serve students in Grades K-5. Highlights include our Capturing Kid's Hearts Program, Celebration of Learning Nights, 5th Grade Capstone Field Trip to Washington DC, and a well-rounded student schedule that includes Spanish, Art, PE, Music & Technology.

    At Banning Lewis Prep, we serve students in Grades 6-12. We carefully transition students into Middle School with purposeful social activities and programs as LEAD our leadership development program, sports through the Central Colorado Athletic League, and numerous clubs and electives. In High School, we offer traditions such as Homecoming, Prom, and Student Senate. We focus on Concurrent Enrollment opportunities, Service Learning Projects, Senior Capstone Projects, and college and career readiness (such as online courses, career & technical business programs, foreign exchange program opportunities and much more. At the High School level, our athletes compete in the Tri-Peaks League and have many additional extracurricular opportunities such as Mock Trial, Jazz & Concert Band, National Honor Society, and more.

    The Director of Security oversees the safety and security operations for two charter schools in Colorado Springs: one K-5 elementary school and one 6-12 secondary school. This role is responsible for managing contracted security services, developing and implementing comprehensive safety plans, conducting violence risk assessments, coordinating Title IX compliance, and ensuring that both schools adhere to local, state, and federal safety regulations. The Director of Security will also lead safety training programs, oversee building drills, and facilitate regular safety round table discussions to promote best practices and continuous improvement in school safety.

    Responsibilities:

    1. Security Management:
      • Oversee and manage contracted security personnel to ensure effective coverage and performance.
      • Develop and enforce security policies and procedures tailored to each school's needs.
      • Conduct regular security audits and assessments of both school campuses.
      • Support the investigation of tips from Safe2Tell other sources of safety concerns

    2. Training and Drills:

      • Plan and conduct safety training for staff, students, and security personnel, including active shooter, lockdown, and evacuation drills.
      • Ensure that all drills are performed regularly and effectively, with thorough post-drill evaluations and feedback.

    3. Violence Risk Assessments:

      • Conduct and help facilitate regular violence risk assessments to identify potential threats and vulnerabilities.
      • Develop and implement strategies to mitigate identified risks and enhance overall school security.
      • Support restorative justice conversations and opportunities for students to repair and restore relationships that have been impacted by their decisions.

    4. Title IX Compliance:

      • Ensure compliance with Title IX regulations, including the management of complaints and investigations related to sexual harassment and discrimination.
      • Provide training and resources to staff and students on Title IX policies and procedures.

    5. Safety Planning:

      • Develop, implement, and regularly update comprehensive safety and emergency response plans for both schools.
      • Collaborate with local law enforcement, emergency responders, and community partners to ensure coordinated response efforts.

    6. Round Table Activities:

      • Organize and lead regular safety round table discussions involving key stakeholders, including school administrators, teachers, parents, and local law enforcement.
      • Foster a culture of safety awareness and proactive risk management through open communication and collaborative problem-solving.

    7. Regulatory Compliance and Best Practices:

      • Stay informed about current laws, regulations, and best practices related to school safety and security.
      • Ensure that both schools comply with all applicable safety regulations and standards.
      • Implement industry best practices to continuously improve the security posture of the schools.

    Full-time position requiring flexibility to respond to emergencies outside of regular school hours. Primarily based on school campuses with occasional travel for meetings, training, and conferences.

    About You:

    • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management, or a related field or significant work history in Law Enforcement, or a closely related field.
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in school security or a related field, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of Title IX regulations and experience in handling Title IX cases.
    • Strong understanding of safety and emergency management principles, including experience in conducting drills and risk assessments.
    • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and build strong relationships with community partners.
    • Familiarity with Colorado state laws and regulations related to school safety is preferred.
