    Description

    Applications are now being accepted to create an eligibility list for Douglas County Deputy Sheriff positions for current and future vacancies.

    A structured interview will be weighted at 100%. Veteran points will be added to the score if a DD214 is submitted. Background investigation, pre-employment physical, and psychological post-offer exam must also be passed.

    Applications are being accepted for candidates who are:
    • Wisconsin law enforcement certifiable ( those who have successfully completed an approved Wisconsin 720-hour academy) at the time of hire;
    • Wisconsin law enforcement certified and currently employed by a Wisconsin law enforcement agency, or;
    • Employed by a law enforcement agency in another state and eligible to take the Wisconsin law enforcement reciprocity exam.
    Applicants must submit a copy of their Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board or documentation supporting their eligibility with their application to be considered for this position.

    Full-time based on 40 hours per week/2080 hours per year. Based on 2023 wage scale and union contract $23.27-$31.02

    Essential Duties

    Under the general supervision of the Sheriff and Chief Deputy:
    All Assignments: Enforce State and local laws and preserve the peace; Protect life and property; Assist and cooperate with other law enforcement and public safety agencies; Appear in court as a witness; May speak before public groups, assisting the public with information and education; May provide training to new recruits; Render first aid; Become knowledgeable and adhere to all department rules, regulations, policy, procedures and directives; May provide vacation or other temporary relief for supervisor or for other classes as required; Perform all other duties pertinent to the position, or as directed by shift commander or senior deputy.

    Patrol Division: Patrol assigned area in an automobile, perform traffic control, and check for crime and suspicious or dangerous conditions; Respond to calls from the public regarding crimes; Pursue and apprehend suspects; Conduct initial and follow-up investigations of crimes, including traffic accidents; Interview witnesses and victims of crime and others who might have information relating to the whereabouts of suspects; Interrogate suspects; Conduct undercover investigations; Service warrants and make arrests; Serve legal papers such as subpoenas, summons, complaints and writs of attachment and execution; Search crime scenes for physical evidence such as fingerprints, footprints and tire marks; Collect and preserve physical evidence; Photograph crime scenes; Arrange for removal of the deceased and stand by at the autopsy.

    Court Security: Conduct prisoners to and from court and guard them while in courts; Maintain order in courts; Transport prisoners to and from detention institutions.
    Minimum Qualifications

    A two-year Associate degree or a minimum of 60 college credits in criminal justice/police science or a related field is preferred. Must possess a valid driver's license and be 21 years of age. Must successfully complete a background investigation and have not been convicted of an offense amounting to a felony unless the judgment of conviction has been reversed or a complete pardon has been granted.

    KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: Working knowledge of state and county laws; Working knowledge of methods and practices employed in detection and apprehension of criminals; Working knowledge of principles of human motivation and behavior.

    ABILITIES REQUIRED: Understand, interpret, explain and enforce state and county laws and ordinances clearly and courteously; React quickly and calmly in emergency situations and adopt an effective course of action; Obtain information through interview, interrogation and observation; Write clear and concise reports; Operate radio and telephone equipment; Operate firearms safely and skillfully; Follow oral and written instructions; Establish and maintain effective relationships; Perform a variety of active public safety duties involving strenuous physical activity, such as pursuing and restraining suspects and lifting injured persons; Participate in ongoing training, education and improvement; Learn and become proficient in the use of department equipment including computerized law enforcement data bases; Maintain state certification as a law enforcement officer (patrol level) through successful completion of a minimum of 24 hours annually of mandatory training; Successfully complete a background investigation for a law enforcement officer.

    PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES/REQUIREMENTS: See at an uncorrected vision of corrected to 20-20 in each eye with normal color vision and unrestricted peripheral vision. Pass a post job offer physical examination for law enforcement standards and maintain those standards.
