    Job Summary:
    The Medical Assistant performs routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep sheltermedical clinics and psychiatric services running smoothly.

    Medical Assistant works with the MD andPsych NP in providing triage medical and psychiatric services to the clients living at the Tillary StreetWomen's Shelter and the Borden Ave Veterans Shelter programs.

    The duties of the medical assistantmay vary from Shelter to Shelter depending on the location and population.

    The Medical Assistant reports to the Shelter MD and the Shelter Associate Chief Medical Officer-ICL and maintains a cooperative working relationship with patients, clients, medical staff, shelter staff and interdepartmental personnel.


    Duties and Responsibilities:

    The Medical Assistant is expected to practice safe and ethical assistantduties within his/her scope under the direction of Physician.

    The Medical Assistant should understandhis/her own limitations, seeking advice and assistance when necessary.

    Specific duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

    Clerical DutiesAnswer TelephoneGreet patientsUpdate and file patient medical recordsFill out insurance formsHandle both written and verbal correspondenceSchedule appointmentsAssist with hospital admissions and/or EmergenciesClinical DutiesTaking medical historiesTaking and recording vital signsExplaining treatment procedures to patientsPreparing patients for examinationAssisting physician with examinationsCollect and prepare laboratory specimensPerform laboratory tests and blood workWork with pharmacies in attaining client medicationDispose of contaminated suppliesSterilize medical equipmentAuthorize prescription refills as directed by physicianPerform EKGsChange dressingsUtilize resources and materials in an efficient and safe mannerConsistently practice universal precautionsPerforms all duties promptly in a competent and caring mannerMaintain good working relations and communication among patients/residents and allhealthcare personnelPresent a neat appearance and dress in compliance with the client facilities policiesThe Medical Assistant is responsible and accountable to their assigned patients and to the clientInstitution.

    The Medical Assistant is under the direct supervision of the Physician or other assignedpersonnel and must have the ability to follow directions/instruction from his/her supervisor.
