  • Position Summary & Responsibilities

    Position Summary: This position provides Activity Therapy programming for patients on PSP and SSP in order to fulfill the mission/vision of Larned State Hospital. The Activity Therapist I must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served at Larned State Hospital (which includes Adults ages 18 to 85+). The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit and department policy and procedures.

    Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

    Provide Therapy Services

  • Plan and implement Therapeutic, Leisure and Educational Activity Therapy Sessions.
  • Provide individual and group Activity Therapy sessions, as assigned, for patients at Larned State Hospital.
  • Planning and Preparation for Sessions

  • Plan activity therapy sessions designed to meet the needs of patients.
  • Develop age- and ability-appropriate sessions for patients.
  • Gather and obtain needed materials for therapy sessions.
  • Assessments/Documentation

  • Participate in Activity Therapy Assessments on admission
  • Completes patient schedule, assessment paperwork and documentation after Activity Therapy Assessment is completed.
  • Write roster notes for assigned Activity Therapy sessions.
  • Complete incident reports and necessary operational forms.
  • Treatment Team Functions

  • Function as a liaison between Activity Therapy staff and Treatment Team to gather and convey information regarding patients' response to treatment.
  • Maintain Professional Competence

  • Attend in-service training that is relevant to current job assignment.
  • Provide training for staff in areas of current competence.
  • Review resources for new activity therapy ideas.
  • Maintain credentials and licenses as required (First Aid, CPR/PR, CPI, Lifeguard Certification).
  • Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications :
  • Four years of experience in therapeutic recreation, horticulture therapy or one of the creative arts or therapy disciplines such as art, dance/movement or music therapy. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
  • CPR Certification and Red Cross First Aide Certification within 60 days of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.
  • CPI Certification within one month of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.
  • Preferred Qualifications :
  • Certified lifeguard training
  • Bachelor's degree in related field, such as, but not limited to, vocational rehabilitation, industrial arts, recreation therapy, art therapy, music therapy, physical education, psychology, communications, horticulture therapy, education and criminal justice. Experience working with a targeted population may be substituted for education.
  • Prefer experience in working with psychiatric patients or offenders.
  • Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements : Ability to pass a KBI background and pre-employment drug test.
