    Description

    Summary/Objective

    The Detox Counselor is responsible for milieu management and program activities under the direction of the Clinical Director. Facilitate program services, including intakes, and admissions and discharges as needed.

    Essential Functions

    1. Demonstrates competence in treatment team responsibilities by:
      1. Attending and participating in team meeting at beginning of shift as scheduled;
      2. Assisting with training new staff
      3. Providing support to shift staff in use of information systems and points of contact.
    2. Demonstrates competence in managing therapeutic milieu by:
      1. Facilitating groups as assigned and documenting client participation;
      2. Providing crisis and/or supportive counseling, as needed;
      3. Greeting new clients and orienting them to campus as requested by Management
      4. Assist with ASA (against staff advice) prevention and intervention, identifying early warning signs and accessing all resources.
    3. Demonstrates competence in clinical documentation by:
      1. Completing all chart notes within 24 hours of service delivery, utilizing DAP format, as appropriate.
      2. Charting all process groups, didactic groups, individual counseling sessions, significant client interactions, and collateral/family contacts, as required.
    4. Demonstrates competence in effective communication by:
      1. Receiving verbal report from outgoing shift at beginning of each shift;
      2. Completing incident reports as required and notifying appropriate administration when necessary;
      3. Notifying Clinical Director or Manager on Duty of exceptional client situations;
      4. Ability to receive and understand verbal and written instructions.
    5. Demonstrates competence in effectively managing shift personnel by:
      1. Working with the Clinical Director to assure adequate staffing is maintained during the week to effectively handle work demand.
      2. Appointing proper personnel to be in charge during personal absences from work and communicating who is in charge to supervisor.
      3. Notifying immediate supervisor of scheduled or emergency time off in a timely manner.
      4. Effectively and promptly report potential disciplinary issues to the Leadership team.
      5. Understanding and strictly adhering to policies regarding sexual or other harassment and violence in the workplace and immediately reporting any suspicions or knowledge of violations to the Clinical Director.
    6. Demonstrates competence in individual counseling by:
      1. Creating an atmosphere of trust
      2. Utilizing effective listening skills
      3. Providing respectful confrontation of behavior and attitudes
      4. Identifying road blocks to sobriety
      5. Utilizing techniques appropriate to age and/or special needs of client.
    7. Demonstrates competence in group counseling by:
      1. Utilizing effective listening skills.
      2. Creating and maintaining group cohesiveness
      3. Utilizing group structure to focus on addiction issues and promote change
      4. Utilizing techniques appropriate to age and/or special needs of group members.
    8. Demonstrates competence in assessment by:
      1. Identifying how chemical dependency has impacted life areas
      2. Creating atmosphere supportive of self-disclosure by the client.
      3. Understanding biological dimensions of chemical dependency.
      4. Understanding cultural factors that impact addiction and recovery.
      5. Understanding the impact of age, gender, sexual orientation, and ethnic origin have on treatment needs.
      6. Ability to communicate all assessments in a clear and concise manner.
      7. Evaluating the risk of self-harm, suicide and violence.
    9. Demonstrates competence in case management by:
      1. Clearly communicating with referring agencies/individuals necessary information about the client's condition as allowable with respect to confidentiality protocols and laws.
      2. Contacting family member(s)to obtain collateral information within 12 hours of admission.
      3. Establishing rapport with the client's support system involved in treatment as allowable with respect to confidentiality protocols and laws.
      4. Working together with multidisciplinary team and the client to develop comprehensive discharge plan that effectively addresses the client's needs.
    10. Demonstrates competence in the use of information systems by:
      1. Maintaining a skill level appropriate for current job duties.
      2. Retrieving and sending emails
      3. Properly using network access, following all computer policies and procedures.
      4. Accurately documenting all pertinent information in the Best Notes system, or hard copy chart as applicable.
    11. Demonstrates competence in the Safety Procedures of Nova Recovery Center.
    12. Arranges for coverage of responsibilities prior to being off duty by submitting written request for time off to Clinical Director at least two weeks in advance.
    13. Maintains confidentiality in all matters pertaining to clients, staff, and any other information this position may be privy to.
    14. Acts as a representative of Nova Recovery LLC at work and in the community by representing a favorable image of the Company to all outside contacts with courteous and tactful behavior towards clients, visitors and other staff.
    15. Demonstrates ability to be a team player.
    16. Dresses in an appropriate manner according to the dress code.
    17. Ability to work well under pressure.
    18. Responsible for being at work, on time, per the established department schedule.
    19. Practices in compliance with the Code of Ethical Conduct.
    20. Maintains licensing requirements and provides documentation of this to the Company.
    21. Completes required in-service training and continuing education within required timelines.
    22. Complies with all applicable Nova Recovery Policies and Procedures.
    23. All other duties and/or special projects as assigned by Management.
    Work Environment

    This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

    Physical Demands

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position requires long periods of sitting, periodic standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching. This position requires lifting and/or moving items up to 10 pounds.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

    This is a full -time position and hours of work are Monday through Friday for the intensive outpatient/sober living departments, Monday through Sunday for the Residential Department and Sunday-Thursday for all Detox units. The hours of operation are 8:00 am until 9:00 pm for the IOP/sober living departments and 8:00 am until 7:00 pm for the Residential Department, and 9:00am-6:00pm for Detox, or as scheduled by the Manager. Must be available to work as needed including weekends and holidays.

    Travel

    This position may travel to other Nova locations in the State of Texas.

    Required Education and Experience

    High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related field preferred. Must be licensed as an LCDC, Counselor Intern (completed 4,000 required hours), or another Qualified Credentialed Counselor. Prior supervisory experience is preferred. Must maintain license in good standing with licensing agency.

    Qualifications

    General Qualifications

    Basic knowledge is required in the following areas: relapsing nature of substance disorders, family dynamics, DSM criteria for psychiatric disorders commonly occurring with substance use disorders; basic pharmacology and neurophysiology of addiction and dual disorders and 12 step programs. Basic computer skills are required. Must have an understanding of the chemical dependency treatment setting, the philosophy of care, and a strong working knowledge of the 12 step recovery process. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work with other departments within the Nova Recovery LLC programs. Ability to be a self-starter with minimal supervision.
