Job description
Children's Cardiology, a subsidiary of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, is comprised of more than 60 pediatric cardiologists providing comprehensive care for patients from before birth to age 21 who have acquired or congenital heart disease. The Genetic Counselor evaluates individual and family risk for inherited disorders, including genetic syndromes and birth defects; provides education to families regarding genetic conditions; and supports informed decision‑making and coping strategies for patients and families at risk.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master of Science in Genetic Counseling from an accredited training program.
- Board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or Board eligible with certification expected within 1 year.
- GA Genetic Counselor License or Temporary license with expectation of obtaining licensure within 1 year.
- Experience in clinical genetic counseling and pediatric cardiology preferred.
- Demonstrated attention to detail, organizational skills and follow-through discipline.
- Effective oral and written communication skill required.
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks concurrently.
- Demonstrated excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Must have a valid driver's license and reliable vehicle for transportation for travel to locations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Support genetic testing needs of outpatient specialty clinics for Noonan/Williams, Arrhythmia, Cardiomyopathy and Aortopathy at Center for Advanced Pediatrics, Scottish Rite, Newnan, Lawrenceville, Canton and Macon.
- Provide genetic counseling via telemedicine for patients seen by any Children's Healthcare of Atlanta -Cardiology provider.
- Provide genetic counseling, education and psychological support for patients with or at risk for genetic disorders, or inherited conditions.
- Gather family information and records and interpret histories to assess the chance of familial heart disease.
- Develop expertise in genetic heart disease and genetic cardiac syndromes.
- Understand the purpose, use and limitations of diagnostic cardiology procedures including ECG, ECHO, cMRI, exercise testing, ambulatory monitoring, and device therapies; assist patient in navigating testing.
- Discuss genetic and cardiology testing options including benefits and limitations, to obtain informed consent.
- Document content of visits and results in notes and letters routed to patients, internal and external providers.
- Interpret the significance of laboratory results and communicate findings to patients and physicians.
- Assist patients and their relatives with genetic testing, as indicated.
- Define treatment plans and coordinate care dictated by genetic testing results.
- Perform other projects and duties as assigned.
