    Compensation:Compensation Type:ExemptEmployment Type:Fixed Term (Fixed Term)Scheduled Weekly Hours:20Grade:E03Department:Community OutreachPosition SummaryThe HEP instructor is responsible for delivering specialized, short-term instruction to adult learners in reading, writing, social studies, science and mathematics to prepare them for the High School Equivalency exam. The instructor will also be responsible for developing lesson plans, teaching materials, and assignments and activities to aid student success based on program curriculum, grant objectives, and college and career readiness.Duties & Responsibilities
    • Teaches a broad curriculum of reading, writing, social studies, science, and mathematics to students planning to take the High School Equivalency (HSE) exam;
    • Monitors and facilitates the introduction of new technology and recommend supplemental educational software;
    • Helps students improve how they process information and communication skills alongside teaching critical-thinking and problem-solving skills;
    • Serves as course facilitator to assist students in completing self-paced course work and prepares/previews instructional materials;
    • Assists Lead Instructor/Curriculum Coordinator in developing comprehensive lesson plans based off program curricula, incorporating multiple media; writes/prepares syllabi, tests, tutorials, and instructional materials; prepares and provides official pre- HSE tests; evaluates effectiveness of instructional materials and assessment instruments, revising as needed).
    • Tutors, advises and follows up with students as needed.
    • Observe and evaluate students' work to determine progress and makes suggestions for improvement.
    • Works collaboratively with the program director, lead instructor, faculty, and staff. Tracks attendance/progress and submits reports to Lead Instructor/Curriculum Coordinator to meet State and Federal requirements.
    • Actively pursues and participates in professional development activities to enhance skills in various modes of instruction and knowledge of learning.
    • Patiently and effectively teaches students ages 16 to 60+ who may have learning obstacles or special learning needs.
    • Travels to training and professional development events as needed.
    • Participates in ongoing collaboration and program evaluation.
    • Supports the values of the College: diversity, teaching excellence, student success, innovation and creativity and service to the College.

    MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor's degree in any field.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bilingual in English/Spanish
    • Experience using computer assisted instructional programs
    • Experience teaching to diverse and adult populations
    • Experience working with seasonal and/or migrant farm workers.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

    • Knowledge of Language Arts (reading and writing), science, social studies, and math;
    • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, colleagues and staff representing diverse ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic and learning abilities;
    • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse population, both in and outside the unit and college;
    • An appreciation of diversity and the benefits of a commitment to cultural awareness and sensitivity in the workplace;
    • Excellent customer service skills; including building and maintaining internal/external customer satisfaction and the ability to problem solve;
    • Commitment to professionalism and confidentiality in handling sensitive, confidential and operational information;
    • Effectively use internet for on-line software use; Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel;
    • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and balance a heavy workload;
    • Ability to be self-directed and work independently in a team environment; High organizational and problem solving abilities, task-oriented, and flexible; Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
    • Knowledge of computer assisted instructional programs and the ability to teach diverse and adult populations.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • No or very limited physical effort required;
    • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
    • Must be able to utilize/view a PC and or monitor

    WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is normally performed in a typical office/classroom environment
