The Department of Classics at Case Western Reserve University invites applications for a Full-Time Lecturer in Latin/Classics to commence in August of 2023 for a period of one year, with a possibility of renewal for an additional year. Conferral of Ph.D. by September of 2023 is preferred. The successful candidate will teach 6 courses total (3 per semester), including two upper-level Latin courses, The Ancient Mediterranean in Film (comprising Greece, Rome, The Ancient Near East and Egypt), and Roman Civilization. The other two courses would ideally be from among Latin Literature in English translation, Roman History, Ancient Near East and Egyptian Religion, The Ancient World, or Ancient Warfare (the last two comprising Greece, Rome, The Ancient Near East and Egypt). No service will be expected.

The CWRU Classics Department is primarily an undergraduate program, with majors and minors in Classical Philology, Classical Civilization, and The Ancient Near East and Egypt. Class sizes in the languages are small and the students are generally both able and motivated. We also have a Graduate Certificate program (Postbac), and an MA Program. We also are a part of the voluminous OhioLINK library system.

The department comprises an interdisciplinary group of colleagues, all of whom maintain significant connections with other areas of the humanities with some holding secondary appointments. Recently the department's focus has expanded to encompass the civilizations of the Ancient Near East and Egypt. In keeping with the department's current profile, then, we seek a versatile and well-rounded applicant who would be comfortable teaching more general courses on the Ancient Mediterranean World.

The campus of CWRU sits in the cultural center of Cleveland known as the "University Circle", which is home to The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, The Cleveland Botanical Garden, The Western Reserve Historical Society, The Cleveland Orchestra, and The Cleveland Institute of Music. Downtown is just fifteen minutes away, with a vibrant Theater District, the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, the Great Lakes Science Center, Ohio City (with many small breweries and a fresh produce market), and the homes of the Cavaliers, Guardians, and Browns. Two sandy beaches on Lake Erie are nearby, one just west of downtown, and one 30 minutes east, and the city is ringed by an impressive number of parks for hiking and outdoor activities, including Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Applications consisting of a letter of application that addresses qualifications for this teaching position, a curriculum vitae (including courses taught), a one-page diversity statement that explains how diversity, equity, and inclusion inform your past and/or future teaching and professional experience, and three letters of reference (directly from referees) should be uploaded electronically to Interfolio at Review of applications will commence on or shortly after June 23, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled. Any questions concerning this position may be directed to Prof. Evelyn Adkins, Department of Classics, CWRU ).

Case Western Reserve University provides reasonable accommodations to applicants with disabilities. Applicants requiring a reasonable accommodation for any part of the application and hiring process should contact the Office of Equity at or request a reasonable accommodation. Determinations as to granting reasonable accommodations for any applicant will be made on a case-by-case basis.
