    Description
    PRIMARY PURPOSE: Plan and provide therapy to students with mental, physical, and emotional disabilities. Assess students and provide therapeutic intervention to maximize physical or mental functioning, increase independent functioning, and/or adjust to disabilities.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education/Certification:
    1. Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy or related program
    2. Valid Texas license as an Occupational Therapist granted by the Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners
    Special Knowledge/Skills:
    1. Knowledge of rehabilitation procedures, activities, and equipment used in occupational therapy
    2. Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
    3. Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
    Experience:
    1. One year of experience as an occupational therapist
    Major Responsibilities and Duties:
    1. Assess students with disabilities and determine eligibility for services.
    2. Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with the interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students according to district procedures.
    3. Plan and provide direct and consultative services consistent with occupational therapy goals contained in students' Individual Education Plans (IEP).
    4. Evaluate student progress and determine readiness for termination of occupational therapy services.
    5. Design, construct, alter, and provide students with adaptive equipment and devices to promote maximum independence.
    6. Consult with educational staff and parents regarding occupational therapy.
    7. Provide staff development training in assigned school to assist school personnel with selection and use of adaptive equipment and understanding of occupational therapy program
    8. Provide individual instruction with certain students to staff in areas such as appropriate lifting techniques, positioning and feeding of students and overall student safety.
    9. Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.
    10. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level, interests, and needs of the students.
    11. Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and Student Handbook.
    12. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the Occupational Therapy Program and implement changes based on the findings.
    13. Assist in the selection of equipment and adaptive materials.
    14. Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.
    15. Coordinate special projects or programs as assigned by the Instructional Support Director. Such programs include the Assistive Technology Team and the Self-contained Vocational Adjustment Center.
    16. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records and other documents required.
    17. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education Rule, and local board policy, including confidentiality.
    18. Comply with all district routines and regulations.
    19. Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.
    20. Serve as a liaison between the medical community and the Instructional Support Program for special education.
    21. Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignments.
    22. Participate in district/Region IV committees as apppointed.
    23. Exemplify high standards of ethical conduct.
    24. Display tolerance necessary for accepting supervision for and criticism of job performance.
    25. Work in harmony with supervisory, faculty, and peer personnel.
    26. Use professional information discreetly and judiciously.
    27. Support and follow administrative and board policy.
    28. Represent the school system to the community in a positive, professional way.
    29. Maintain a sincere, friendly attitude toward patrons.
    30. Perform other duties as assigned. (Assistive Tech. Coord.; Special Olympics Coach).
    Working Conditions:

    Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

    Maintain emotional control under stress; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks; media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment.

    Terms of Employment:

    Work year established by the board; salary according to current schedule.

    Evaluation:

    Performance of this job will be evaluated annually.
