    Senior Software Engineer, Wikimedia Enterprise

    The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in shaping the future of our engineering strategy while collaborating closely with the product team. You will take on critical challenges related to innovating, building, and maintaining high-volume data feeds for Wikipedia content aimed at commercial reusers.

    Wikimedia Enterprise is an exciting, revenue-generating initiative designed to deliver fast, comprehensive, and secure data ingestion for organizations looking to utilize Wikimedia/Wikipedia content in various environments. Our mission is to enhance the user experience for readers beyond our own platforms, broaden the reach and discoverability of our content, and improve attribution and verifiability for those who repurpose our knowledge.

    You will be responsible for:

    • Applying your creativity to enhance our existing infrastructure.
    • Playing a key role in defining our technical roadmap.
    • Ensuring the reliability of frequently used commercial data feeds.
    • Supporting the deployment of new features and code updates.
    • Troubleshooting and diagnosing emerging issues within our application stack.
    • Contributing to the architectural design of scalable services.
    • Responding to incidents and managing system alerts across Wikimedia Enterprises' production infrastructure.
    • Embodying our values in every aspect of your work.

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • Thrives in a semi-ambiguous, startup-like environment.
    • Experience in supporting complex web applications on AWS or comparable cloud platforms.
    • Familiarity with Kafka or similar event processing systems.
    • Expertise in and Go applications.
    • Proficiency in configuration management and orchestration tools (e.g., ECS, Kubernetes) along with modern observability practices.
    • A passion for automating and streamlining tasks.
    • Skilled in shell and scripting languages pertinent to SRE/Operations fields (e.g., Python, Go, Bash, Ruby).
    • Strong foundation in Linux/Unix and troubleshooting techniques.
    • Excellent English communication skills and the ability to work independently as part of a globally distributed team.
    • Holds a B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent work experience.

    Desirable Qualities:

    • A demonstrated history of contributions to open source projects.
    • Experience with non-cloud-based infrastructures.
    • Startup experience is a bonus.
    • Familiarity with remote work dynamics in a distributed team.

    We also value if you possess fluency in languages other than English.
