The Cyber Range Student Assistant is a vital team member responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the university's Cyber Range.
This position offers a unique, hands-on opportunity for a student to gain practical experience in event coordination, operational support, and technical administration within a live cybersecurity environment.
The ideal candidate is organized, proactive, and eager to learn.Candidates must have the flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends to support scheduled events (e.g., info sessions, competitions), which are communicated well in advance.
ResponsibilitiesCyber Range Facility Upkeep
Description:
Ensure the Cyber Range remains a clean, professional, and organized workspace. This includes managing cables, cleaning equipment, and organizing the physical space to maintain an environment conducive to learning.

Usage Data Tracking
Description:
Help maintain logs and spreadsheets related to Cyber Range usage, such as student sign-ins and session attendance, to support the Administrator with operational reporting.
Scheduling AssistanceDescription:
Monitor the Cyber Range's shared inbox for booking requests.
You will be responsible for checking the calendar for potential availability, gathering all necessary details from the requestor, and then presenting the request to the Administrator for final approval.
Once approved, you will assist in communicating the confirmation back to the requestor.Nexus Info Session Setup
Description:
Assist the Administrator in preparing for information sessions.
Responsibilities include setting up the presentation room, testing audio and visual equipment (microphones, projectors, cameras), and ensuring virtual meeting links (Zoom/Teams) are functional.
Mock Interview Event SupportDescription:
Act as essential event support for large-scale mock interview days.
Your primary role is to ensure the event runs smoothly by guiding visiting students and industry professionals to the correct locations, answering questions, and managing the flow of people.
You will also assist with the setup and takedown of the event space.Cyber Range Tours
Description:
Conduct guided tours of the facility for visitors, showcasing its capabilities and explaining how it supports hands-on cybersecurity learning, as directed by the Administrator.
Pop-Up Event CoordinationDescription:
Assist in coordinating logistics for pop-up events where industry professionals visit to speak with students. This includes helping prepare the space and ensuring guest speakers have what they need.
Student Organization Liaison (Black Box Society)
Description:
Act as a helpful point of contact for the Black Box Society.
Assist them with scheduling range time and setting up the technical environment for competition practice, all under the Administrator's guidance.
Promotional Material Creation & DistributionDescription:
Create basic promotional materials, such as flyers and digital signs, using university-approved templates (e.g., in Canva, Adobe Express).
You will also be responsible for the physical distribution of these materials, which includes hanging flyers and signs in designated high-traffic areas across campus to promote upcoming events and opportunities in the Cyber Range.
Website & SharePoint UpdatesDescription:
Perform routine content updates to the Cyber Range website and SharePoint sites as directed, ensuring event calendars, news, and resources are accurate.
Documentation AssistanceDescription:
Assist the Administrator in writing and updating operational documents, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), user guides, and inventories, to ensure all documentation is clear and current.
Technical Assistance for Systems and NetworksDescription:
Under the close supervision of the Administrator, provide technical support by assisting with OS installation and configuration, helping to document network layouts and assets, and performing basic hardware troubleshooting.
Peer Training and MentorshipDescription:
As you gain experience, you may have the opportunity to prepare and lead technical training sessions for your peers, such as introductory Capture the Flag (CTF) workshops.
This is a key growth opportunity to develop leadership and teaching skills under the guidance of the Administrator.Performs other related duties and assists with special projects as assigned by the Administrator.
Required Qualifications
Must be a currently enrolled student at the university in good academic standing.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with students, faculty, and industry professionals.
Demonstrated reliability, proactiveness, and a strong work ethic.
Must have the flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends to support scheduled events.
Comfortable using standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, email, calendars) and a willingness to learn new tools.
Preferred Qualifications
Currently pursuing a degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
Basic familiarity with the Linux and Windows command line and general networking concepts.
Previous experience in a customer service or event support role.
Previous experience in a help desk role.
Public speaking, tutoring, or experience leading group activities.
Experience with content creation tools like Canva or Adobe Express for making flyers or social media posts.
Proposed Salary
This position is an hourly position paying $15 per hour. This position works up to 19 hours per week but could be less dependent on office needs.
Work Schedule
The Academic Operation Coordinator, Jennifer Stone, will create a schedule based on the student's class schedule. The schedule will be set for the semester, and no changes will be made once it is set.

Physical Requirements
Frequently moves about the Cyber Range and across campus to hang flyers, and support events.
Ability to lift and move computer equipment, such as monitors and PC towers, weighing up to 30 pounds.
Frequently required to position self to maintain computer equipment, which may include stooping, kneeling, or crouching to access cables under desks or in racks.
