    Summary


    The radiation therapist administers the radiation to the patient throughout the treatment process, as a member of an interdisciplinary team of radiation oncologists, radiation physicists, medical dosimetrists, radiation therapists, nurses, and support staff that plans and delivers the course of treatment.

    He/she provides patient care through the implementation of policies and procedures set for by Allison Radiation Oncology and

    SRMC.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities


    Assists in localizing tumors, participating in treatment planning, and delivering high doses of ionizing radiation prescribed by a radiation oncologist.

    Maintain a high degree of accuracy and an awareness of safety issues.

    Remains sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of patients.

    Demonstrates an understanding of cancer, radiation biology, radiation therapy techniques, equipment technology, radiation safety

    and the psychosocial aspects of cancer.

    Uses professional judgment and critical thinking when assisting with treatment planning, recognizing and resolving equipment

    problems and treatment discrepancies.

    Anticipates patient needs and concerns and determines when treatment should be withheld until a physician can be consulted.

    Demonstrates competency to deliver optimal radiation therapy treatments to all patients, CT/Sim and conventional sim, HDR, Mold

    room, IMPAC, Portal Vision/Viewstation, basic dose calculations, and billing procedures.

    Assists with Diagnostic CT as requested.

    Reviews patient treatment records and doses daily to ensure that treatment does not exceed the prescribed dose or normal tissue

    tolerance.

    Determines when to contact the physician with patient side effects/questions. Determines the course of action for an emergency or problem situation.

    Verifies the patient has consented to the procedure.

    Addresses and documents patient questions and concerns regarding the procedure when appropriate. Refers questions about

    diagnosis, treatment, or prognosis to the patient's physician.

    Provides information and instruction on proper skin care, diet and self-care procedures.

    Takes portal film according to established protocols. Reviews portal films and initiates changes as necessary.

    Verifies the accuracy of the patient setup before treatment delivery. Verifies treatment console readouts and settings before

    treatment.

    Checks patients' charts weekly.

    Documents diagnostic, treatment, and patient data in the appropriate record. Documents any exceptions from the established

    criteria or procedures.

    Verifies the mathematical accuracy of the prescription and the daily treatment summary.

    Maintains documentation of quality assurance activities, procedures, and results by established guidelines.

    Documents and reports to appropriate personnel on the need for equipment maintenance and repair.

    Demonstrates completion of the appropriate education related to clinical practice. Maintains appropriate credentials and certification related to clinical practice. Participates in educational activities to enhance knowledge, skills, and performance.

    Promotes a positive, collaborative practice atmosphere with the other members of the health care team.

    Develops collaborative partnerships with other health care providers in the interest of diagnostic and therapeutic quality and cost-effectiveness

    Takes on-call as scheduled.

    Performs other duties as required to ensure proper operation of the center.

    EDUCATION/


    LICENSE:
    Graduate of an accredited educational program in radiation therapy. A two-year certificate from college or technical school is required.

    Bachelor's degree preferred. Accredited programs must meet specific curricular and educational standards

    Licensed by the Ohio State Board of Examiners in Radiation Therapy
