    In specific, the position will provide administrative and clinical oversight and support to the nurse practitioners and physicians' assistants on the Neurosurgery service.

    This is a full time role is working with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA. Off-hour, weekends and holiday coverage are often required.
    For this APP role, we are open to both PA and NP candidates.


    Job Description:

    Oversees all aspects of Clinical Neurosurgery. In specific, the position will provide administrative and clinical oversight and support to the nurse practitioners and physicians' assistant on the Neurosurgery service.


    Primary Responsibilities:

    + Functions as a clinical NP or PA provider on the neurosurgery service responsible for direct patient care of the neurosurgical patient. Performs and documents preoperative evaluation (history and physical examinations). Orders and interprets diagnostic tests for neurosurgical patients on the inpatient service.+ Examines and evaluates pre-operative and postoperative patients in in-hospital settings, including but not limited to SICU, TSICU, Neuro ICU, inpatient floors, emergency department and PACU.+ Writes orders for medications, therapies and treatments as appropriate for neurosurgical patients. Adheres to clinical pathways, as appropriate for provision of care. Writes admission, transfer and discharge orders including discharge summaries.+ Performs invasive procedures such as, ventricular, camino bolts and lumbar drains and other invasive procedures such as lumbar punctures, suturing and removing of drains. Works as First Assistant in Operating Room if needed.+ Continually updates clinical knowledge and skills through consultation, formal and informal education, and review of literature for self and clinical team.+ Directly responsible for the training of nurses, residents, NP/PA providers on policies and procedures for neurosurgery patients in all areas of patient care.+ Plans work schedule, assignment of duties on a daily basis and other work associated with ensuring appropriate staff coverage for all components of neurosurgery service.+ Participates in monthly morbidity and mortality rounds and journal club.+ Maintains and follows patient care protocols. Develops clinical guidelines and pathways. Participates in committee meetings and represents neurosurgery in varied leadership meetings.+ Has the authority to direct and support employees daily work activities.

    Required Qualifications:

    + Master's degree in Advanced Practice Nursing or PA required.+ 5-8 years related work experience required and 3-5 years supervisory/management experience required+ Five years experience as NP/PA with at least two years providing clinical services to highly acute patients on a Neurosurgical service.+ Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

    Social/Environmental Requirements:

    + Work requires close attention to task for work to be accurately completed. Intermittent breaks during the work day do not compromise the work.+ Work is varied every day and the employee needs to be adaptable to respond to these changes and use independent judgment and manage priorities.

    Health Care Status:

    HCW1:
    Regular, day-to-day contact; both face-to-face and hands-on (having close contact within three feet for at least five minutes)

    physicians, clinical nurses, phlebotomist, medical assistants, PFT tech, and x-ray tech.- Health Care Worker Status may vary by department

    Sensory Requirements:

    Physical Requirements:

    Medium work:
    Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around throughout the majority of their shift.
