    Description


    The purpose of this classification is to perform professional civil engineering tasks in support of plan review, capital projects, and other infrastructure construction and maintenance projects for an assigned department or program.

    This is an entry level professional position.

    Incumbents begin focusing on routine engineering projects limited in size and scope, but work toward learning all facets of complex construction and maintenance projects.

    The following duties are normal for this position.

    Completes review of civil engineering aspects of site development plans to ensure compliance with applicable laws, ordinances, regulations, and standards:

    evaluates and assess the impact of the proposed project with regards to traffic and transportation, drainage and stormwater runoff, hydrology and hydraulics, flood protection, grading and erosion control, zoning and land use appropriateness, and related issues; approves plans and issues permits or initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations; works with developers/engineers to modify plans for conformity; and maintains comprehensive documentation regarding research and design activities.

    Coordinates and reviews the work of contracted architects and other project service providers:

    works with contractors to make all design modifications necessary to conform with regulatory and project requirements; and approves the designs as appropriate.

    Conducts and/or reviews modeling, planning, and engineering studies in support of project analysis and design, and provides technical support during construction; prepares reports detailing the quantitative analysis performed and concluding recommendations; and reviews and verifies engineering calculations and analysis submitted by engineering technicians.

    Conducts a programming assessment to determine space, infrastructure, facility, and other project requirements; and participates in the development of lists of potential infrastructure improvement projects to be included in the capital investment plan for area of assignment.

    Develops preliminary/final plans and designs using Computer-Aided Drawing (CAD) software and other engineering/drafting tools:

    and develops engineering specifications for project construction based on programming assessment, design concepts, fundamental engineering principles, and approved preliminary plan.

    Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures:

    receives and reviews various documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.

    Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, mapping, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

    Communicates with supervisor, other County employees, architects, property owner, contractors, project manager, other governmental agencies, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering discipline required; some work experience is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.


    Specific License or Certification Required:
    Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license. Status as an Engineer-in-Training is preferred.
