    General Statement of Duties

    T his 12-month position will report directly to the Secondary School Counseling Specialist and will work collaboratively with existing school-based mental health providers and community/private agencies to coordinate and provide multi-tiered systems of support in the form of direct counseling services focused on substance use prevention and intervention, school-based mental health, and youth violence prevention in alignment with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success, and the Standards for School Counseling Programs in Virginia Public Schools.

    Must have a conferred Master's Degree in School Counseling

    Essential Duties

    The physical demands of this assignment include the ability to sit and stand for extended periods and the ability to lift and move items weighing up to 25 pounds.

    • Works with the school-based mental health team to provide Tier 1 evidence-based substance use prevention and intervention, mental health, and violence prevention strategies, curriculum, and programming that are culturally and linguistically appropriate to each school site;
    • Collaborates with the Substance Use Prevention and Intervention Coordinator to determine appropriate interventions, support, and curriculum that supports the present needs of students;
    • Collaborates with the School Mental Health Clinical Supervisor to determine appropriate interventions, support, and curriculum that supports the present mental health needs of students;
    • Provides training to teachers, staff, parents, and other relevant community partners related to substance use prevention, mental health literacy, and violence prevention strategies
    • Through regular participation in the schools' Intervention Team process, identify those students who may benefit from Tier II and Tier III interventions and supports in the areas of substance use, mental health, and violence prevention
    • Collaborates with community agency partners;
    • Coordinates transitions and supports for students reintegrating into the learning environment from alternative settings;
    • Facilitates Tier 2 evidence-based student small group interventions as needed;
    • Facilitates Tier 3 individual evidence-based student interventions, as needed;
    • Collects and analyzes data on evidence-based interventions to evaluate and monitor student progress;
    • Helps to facilitate the evaluation of all tiered programs and curriculum;
    • Links families to additional educational resources and community resources as needed;
    • Coordinates and implements tiered interventions for high school students who have been involved in an incident of reported substance use and/or possession in violation of the HCPS Student Code of Conduct;
    • Performs other duties as assigned
    Must possess thorough knowledge of appropriate counseling interventions in a school setting, with special emphasis on the study of interpersonal relationships, facilitative skills, brief counseling, group dynamics and group learning activities, family systems, multi-cultural and cross-cultural helping approaches, critical incident intervention techniques, threat assessment protocol, and educational and community sources for special school populations.

    Must have a thorough knowledge of the curriculum, instruction, social-emotional, counseling/guidance theory and practice. Counseling skills must include problem identification/analysis skills and basic therapy resolution. Communication skills, both oral and written, must be highly developed to meet the diverse needs of the clientele, professional staff, and other community agencies. Must be able to organize and carry out student activity programs; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Post-graduate certification/licensure/endorsement in school counseling by the Virginia Department of Education.
    • Master's degree with emphasis in School Counseling guidance and counseling.
    • Certified Trauma Practitioner preferred
    Additional Information

    This is a 260 day or 12-month assignment with a July 1, 2024, start date. Applicants selected for interview will be contacted by the program manager.
    • Minimum Starting Salary:$71,187.13Masters*
    (*The compensation listed above is based on the current SY compensation rates and may be subject to any increases or adjustments included in the HCPS school board budget to be released in May.)
