    Job Summary/Basic Function:

    The King- Chavez-Parks GEAR UP/ College Day Program Coordinator (Program Coordinator) contributes to college access, student success, career awareness, and college preparation activities in accordance with the specific terms and expectations associated with the KCP GEAR UP and College Day grant funded programs sponsored by the State of Michigan and the Department of Labor and Economic Development, Workforce Development. Program participants include students from grades 8-12 from approved participating program schools. Constituents include students, parents, middle and secondary school administrators and teachers, as well as the entire university community. The program coordinator facilitates all activities and meets all reporting requirements in compliance with the Michigan Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (MI GEAR UP)/College DAY (CD) Administrative Handbook.

    The Program Coordinator reports to and receives supervision from the Dean of Admissions and Marketing. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) for 12 months.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Program Coordinator's primary work location is in the Admissions Office on the LSSU campus in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, supporting broad-based college and career readiness initiatives among approved participating pre-college institutions. The role also requires regular travel to represent the LSSU GEAR UP/College Day program at community events, high school and college visits, conferences, and at educational/cultural opportunities, utilizing university-provided transportation and resources. Travel is most intense during the months of September through November and February through April but does occur throughout the year as the role also facilitates summer opportunities for participation.

    Duties include:

    Extensive communication including, but not limited to: person-to-person, texting, calling, individual meetings, campus tours, virtual meetings and presentations
    Professionally representing LSSU GEAR UP/College Day at various educational and community programs
    Cultivating prospective students and their families
    Documenting student and family interactions
    Participant tracking, reporting, and updating
    Coaching prospective students on college and career preparedness
    Maintaining a comprehensive knowledge of Lake Superior State University, trends in higher education, academic support, career readiness and the entire post-secondary eco-system
    Leveraging data to prioritize, schedule, and coordinate initiatives
    Develop and execute Work Plan activities that align with expectations outlined in the MI GEAR UP/College Day Administrative Handbook
    Being fiscally responsible in the utilization of university and grant resources and supplies as well as the execution of travel and reimbursement of expenses
    Participation and support of divisional as well as university events and functions
    Dressing the part as required (casual business attire mostly; on certain occasions, LSSU gear)
    Other duties as assigned
    Minimum Qualifications:

    Preferred Qualifications:


    • Experience in a higher-education environment

    • Experience with public presentation

    • Knowledge of student information systems

    • Knowledge of customer relationship management systems

    • High level of proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe

    Physical Demands:

    -Adequate physical fitness to maintain long hours (sometimes) and busy schedule (always)
    -Use of gross motor skills to perform supervisory and organizational duties
    -Use of fine motor skills in operation of keyboard equipment
    -Problem-solving ability
    -Ability to understand and work with numbers and data
    -Ability to see, hear, and speak with or without the use of aids to perform normal office tasks

    Work Hours:

    Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm, Occasional evening and/or weekend work required.
