    Pharmacy Operations is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective coordination of Cardinal Health's pharmacy operations that service acute care hospitals, hospital retail customers, ambulatory care and alternate site facilities, oncology and cardiology practices as well as retail customers.

    Health System Pharmacy is responsible for providing customized pharmacy program solutions that reduce costs and improve patient care quality for hospitals, health systems and other integrated healthcare providers may also consult with and advise healthcare team on prescribed medications, supplies and related processes.

    The Assistant Director of Pharmacy reports to the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) Director of Pharmacy. The Assistant Director of Pharmacy will plan, organize and direct all functions of the LSH pharmacy services. Assure all legal, regulatory, and accrediting requirements are maintained at the best demonstrated practice. Maintain a professional presence throughout the hospital including communications with pharmacy staff and MSOPS leadership. Assure pharmacy services and activities are carried out to meet goals and standards of both Cardinal Health and MSOPS.

  • Oversight of daily operations of pharmacy.
  • Support Director and assignments from director regarding pharmacy operations.
  • Participate in MSOPS committee meetings necessary to enhance practice and patient care.
  • Address actionable items from Accreditation Bodies and regulatory agencies standards related to pharmacy.
  • Support process for medication charges, and that they are accurately and timely posted to accounts.
  • Assure staffing levels to meet needs of patients and requirement of MSOPS.
  • Oversight of purchase of drugs and supplies in accordance with GPO bids and Cardinal Health best demonstrated practices.
  • Oversight of maintaining information systems and other technology applications within the Pharmacy.
  • Use Econotherapeutic best practices in formulary and cost control.
  • Use Cardinal Health applications and DCOA, to analyze data.
  • Responsible for all drug storage areas (all locations) in accordance with legal and best demonstrated practice.
  • Oversight of adherence to standards and training for sterile product preparation in compliance with USP 795/797/800 non-sterile and sterile preparation standards, including annual review of master formulation records.
  • Oversight and support of adherence and reporting requirements of the MSOPS medication safety program.
  • Achieve acceptable scores as defined by Cardinal Health on operations assessments/audits (PPA, Regulatory, Accreditation, BOP, etc).
  • Review of action plans generated by Cardinal Health audits and correction of identified deficiencies.
  • Support employee satisfaction surveys.
  • Define and manage the activities and performance of pharmacy staff.
  • Recruit, hire, retain, and separate employees using Cardinal Health policies and procedures.
  • Arrange/conduct hospital and pharmacy orientation for new hires within 60 days.
  • Implement a training and competency program for all staff and maintain records of those completed competencies.
  • Adherence to the pharmacy budget and all aspects related to good purchasing and inventory practices.
  • Reconcile financial information and communicate on a timely basis as requested.
  • Assure control and documentation of controlled substances as defined within Cardinal Health Regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Oversight of the process for all drug recalls.
  • Lead departmental meetings, in-services, and quality improvement programs in absence of director.
  • Maintains all required training and education per department requirements prior to due date (e.g., mySpark, Continuing Education).
  • Use of Cardinal Health Training Matrix which is updated and published annually.
  • Adheres to facility and departmental policies and procedures. Complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire, and infection control. Complies with all applicable state, local and federal regulations.
  • Understanding and Accountability of/for the requirements and all deliverables of the RFR/Contract and all attachments.
  • Maintains safety-integrity-professionalism of pharmacy at all times including communication with coworkers.
  • Provide in-services to pharmacy staff and hospital professional staff when requested.
  • Assist director with acquisition and renewal of all pharmacy licenses and permits and staff licenses.
  • Annually review licenses for staff via Board of Pharmacy website prior to license expiration date.
  • Print and store in pharmacy personnel file to include attachment of Cardinal Health cover sheet.
  • Oversee monthly medication area inspections and have supporting documentation.
  • Conducts periodic staff meetings as appropriate and requested by director.
  • Perform special projects as requested.
  • Perform as Staff Pharmacist as needed.
  • Other duties and work scheduled as assigned to assure continuity of service to MSOPS.
  • Bachelors degree in pharmacy or PharmD.
  • Must be a "good standing" licensed Pharmacist in the state of Massachusetts.
  • 2-3 years related Inpatient/Hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Prior management experience preferred.
  • Knowledgeable in regulatory compliance issues related to Medication management.
  • Ability to develop, implement and lead all aspects of pharmacy operation.
  • Ability to see, hear, write, and speak clearly in order to communicate with customers and health care professionals.
  • Excellent planning, organizing and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work on call or be in an on call rotation.
  • A Covid-19 vaccination or a legitimate accommodation is required in order to be employed in this position.   • Anticipated salary range: $121,300 - $181,880
