    Job Description

Lumen Orbit is building a network of data centers in space, starting at kilowatts and scaling to gigawatt capacity. Falling launch costs allow us to take advantage of the abundant energy, radiative cooling techniques, and ability to rapidly scale in space.

    Position Overview

As a Manufacturing Engineer at Lumen Orbit, you will design, develop, and optimize manufacturing processes for our space-based data centers, from subsystems to Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT). You will oversee the lifecycle of manufacturing components, ensuring high-quality production and rapid integration onto the spacecraft, collaborating closely with the design team.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Process Ownership:

      • Own and manage manufacturing processes and products for in-house production.
      • Drive processes for volume production, including execution, nonconforming product management, configuration management, traceability tracking, and process control.
    • New Product Introduction:

      • Lead the introduction of new product assemblies, working closely with design engineers and process specialists.
      • Develop and maintain comprehensive work instructions, process documentation, and training materials.
    • Quality and Optimization:

      • Monitor schedules, work-in-progress levels, and defect rates of owned products.
      • Identify trends and opportunities for optimizing product output, enhancing quality, and reducing manufacturing costs.
      • Implement corrective actions and drive process improvements on owned processes and products.
    • Cross-functional Collaboration:

      • Work with the Design Engineering team to identify and escalate manufacturing challenges early in product development.
      • Collaborate with Operations, Supply Chain, and Engineering to optimize manufacturing yields for production ramp.
      • Conduct regular build quality reviews to ensure design intent is achieved and identify opportunities for risk reduction and process improvements.

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Manufacturing, Mechanical, Aerospace, Industrial, Electrical) or a related discipline.
    • 1+ years of professional experience in manufacturing processes in an aerospace or relevant environment

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Master's degree in Engineering (Manufacturing, Mechanical, Aerospace, Industrial, Electrical) or a related discipline.
    • 3+ years of experience in manufacturing or engineering
    • Hands-on experience with Surface Mount Technology (SMT) processing and related manufacturing processes.
    • Knowledge of statistical techniques and methods such as Design of Experiments (DOE) and IPC manufacturing standards.
    • Proficiency with SQL, Python, and Six Sigma methodologies.
    • Strong skills in failure analysis, including tools and methods such as X-ray, cross-section, and polishing.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and drive systemic improvements.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

    Compensation and Benefits:

    • Lumen Orbit offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including:

      • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
      • Short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, and paid parental leave.
      • Generous paid vacation, holidays, and sick leave.

    Additional Requirements:
