- Plan and direct patrol and support services on assigned shifts
- Provide leadership, direction and training to police personnel on shifts after regular business hours.
- Provide on going professional development, goal setting and evaluation to police and civilian personnel through the University's Professional Development Plan (PDP) program.
- Clearly communicate performance output expectations through regular and consistent one on one interactions with personnel on assigned shifts.
- Hear community complaints reported during assigned shifts, determine best course of action, ensure the Commander is aware of complaints and the progress or status of internal matters and issues of public concern.
- Respond to emergencies or crises and serve as a liaison to local law enforcement and emergency responders.
- Oversee the management of the police communications center during assigned shifts.
- Fulfill collateral responsibilities including but not limited to: scheduling, report review, staff training, community training, records management, property and evidence management, equipment procurement, Clery reporting, staff selection, court document processing, committee participation, background investigations, comfort canine handler, special event planning and internal investigations.
- React quickly and calmly to emergency situations by determining an appropriate course of action and ensuring an appropriate response utilizing tact, diplomacy and good judgment to resolve the issue.
- Conduct investigations at the scenes of crimes and accidents by gathering evidence, locating and questioning witnesses and giving aid and support to victims.
- Appropriately utilize computerized law enforcement records systems.
- Provide first aid including CPR and utilization of an AED.
- Understand basic emergency response principles.
- Respond to and investigate fire and burglar alarm activations.
- Assist in implementation of the University Emergency Operations Plan as prescribed.
- Provide campus wide police patrol on foot and in vehicles to protect persons and property.
- Investigate any observed disturbances, irregularities, hazards or suspicious circumstances.
- Investigate calls for service of a non criminal nature, and assess individual cases to determine appropriate action.
- Investigate vehicle accidents, complete required forms and reports and take appropriate enforcement action.
- Complete special investigations as assigned.
- Mediate disputes involving community members.
- Actively assist and collaborate with other police, fire and public safety agencies as necessary.
- Operate and service department vehicles safely and in compliance with all applicable Illinois Vehicle Code provisions and University policy.
- Perform individual post functions as set forth in department policies including checking, locking and opening University buildings and offices.
- Provide motorist assistance such as vehicle unlocks and jump starts.
- Develop an extensive knowledge of the University, its policies, locations of buildings, geography and personnel, organizational structure, traffic flow, and problem areas.
- Conduct requested and self initiated security inspections to assist in environmental management for better security.
- Provide security escorts to students and others upon request.
- Perform crowd control duties as necessary during special events or emergency incidents.
- Safely regulate vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow.
- Enforce University Behavioral standards and policies firmly, tactfully, equally, and with respect for the rights of others.
- Apprehend and arrest suspects for felony, misdemeanor or Village ordinance offenses in accordance with departmental practices.
- Conduct searches of persons, vehicles, and places in accordance with State and Federal law and departmental procedures.
- Enforce traffic and parking regulations as prescribed by applicable Illinois Vehicle Code provisions, Village ordinances and University policy.
- Demonstrate an understanding of department policy regarding limits of authority and use of force.
- Possess an ability to manage conflict in unstructured, controversial or complex situations.
- Write reports and maintain appropriate documentation according to departmental standards.
- Ascertain facts by personal contact, observation, investigation and examination of law enforcement records.
- Participate in the development and presentation of crime prevention programming and community education.
- Actively participate in departmental community policing initiatives.
- Collaborate with Residence Life staff and other key Student Services departments to provide programming and community outreach.
- Appear as needed in University conduct hearings and criminal and traffic court.
- Assist in field training of new staff as required.
- Courteously greet and assist the public by providing prompt, flexible and user friendly customer service.
- Use appropriate discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information.
- Interact and support team efforts within and between the University's divisions and departments.
- Understand and execute difficult verbal and/or written instructions and guidelines.
- Must be at least 21 years of age and have a high school diploma
- Must be certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board as a full time Police Officer.
- Must possess a minimum combined five years of experience as a full time law enforcement officer or a professional supervisor.
- Must possess a valid Illinois driver's license with a good driving record.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to walk, run, climb, provide assistance to persons in distress, operate required equipment (including police bicycles and various weapon systems), and work outdoors in a variety of adverse weather conditions
- Must be able to work with flexible schedules involving evening, weekend and holiday work.
- Ability to successfully complete various required departmental training programs (including police bicycle and defensive tactics).
- Ability to send and receive information with necessary optical, auditory and manual dexterity.
- Must pass a psychological exam, basic skills assessment and personality profile.
- Must pass a physical examination.
- Must pass a background investigation including a fingerprint check and polygraph exam.
- A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Previous experience as a police supervisor.
- Three to five years of experience as a police officer.
- Previous experience in campus law enforcement and / or student development.
- Proficiency in common business software applications: word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, email, etc.

Job Description Summary
The University Police Sergeant is a member of the Police Department leadership team.
The function of the University Police Sergeant is to provide leadership and supervision to University Police Officers, Campus Safety Officers and Campus Safety Assistants assigned to their shift team.
Additionally, the University Police Sergeant functions as a working member of the shift by assisting to maintain security and safety for assigned areas, effectively responding to requests for service and enforcing applicable state and local laws and University policies.
Police Sergeants are an integral part of the department's overall community policing strategy.Police Sergeants are part of the University's team of first responders equipped to assist in various emergency and non-emergency situations.

Police Sergeants may be required to work overtime on an as needed basis and may be called upon to perform other assigned duties as required.
Police Sergeants must maintain a high level of proficiency in the use of police equipment including the handling and use of firearms and be capable of using deadly force as appropriate based on the laws of the State of Illinois and Department policy.
