    JOB SUMMARY:


    The Polysomnographic Technologist is an experienced and fully competent Technologist who works under the general supervision of Clinical Medical Director or designee to provide for comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders.

    Performs advanced duties including the scoring of sleep studies and preparation of preliminary report for physician interpretation, completing the process for the final report once signed off by the Physician.

    Conducts sleep studies, including advanced and complex procedures, performing polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services. Participates in quality improvement initiatives. Works independently exercising sound judgment and executing above average clinical skills on challenging procedures and patient care situations.

    Delivers exceptional patient care and adheres to standards and guidelines established by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT), American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and Pullman Regional Hospital to ensure optimal patient safety and customer service.


    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education/Training:
    Successful completion of a Polysomnography Program associated with State licensure.

    Experience:
    Previous sleep medicine experience preferred. BLS certification required within 3 months of hire.

    License/Registration:
    Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).

    Population Served:
    Pediatric, Adolescent, Young Adult, Middle Age, and Elderly.



    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    Planning and Prioritizing

    Plans patient care by following procedural protocols to ensure collection of appropriate data.

    Demonstrates the ability to reprioritize duties to achieve better results and make necessary modifications in procedures based on patient response.

    Evaluates and reports on inventory levels.

    Information Gathering

    Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free.

    Establishes and documents baseline values, observations, sleep stages, clinical events, position changes and other significant events such as cardiac arrhythmias, seizure activities, types of apneas, hypoxemias, sleep talking, PLMS and other movement disorders.

    Verifies integrity of collected data and completes the data collection process (e.g. repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.).

    Decision-Making


    Implements appropriate intervention (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and Bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.), involving others, including consulting with physician regarding any medical concerns, as needed to ensure quality outcomes.

    Reports near misses and inputs errors promptly to improve processes and identify trends. Identifies appropriate corrective action and improvement activities and contributes to meeting departmental and hospital targets for quality and safety.

    Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age-specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

    Communication

    Explains the procedure and orients the patient to the Sleep Lab. Demonstrates effective written and spoken communication skills.

    Collaborates with all members of the patient care team by actively communicating and reporting pertinent patient care information and data in a comprehensive manner.

    Evaluates sleep study related equipment, reporting and documenting malfunctions. Consults with leadership regarding technical issues. Responds to study participant's procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information. Communicates with patients and significant others in an open and respectful manner.

    Technical Proficiency


    Prepares patients for procedures, providing for their physical needs, applying electrodes, sensors, and other monitoring equipment per department protocols and professional standards.

    Performs appropriate physiological calibrations to ensure proper signals, adjusting as necessary for optimum outcomes. Performs difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions, analyzing complex situations, taking appropriate actions. Performs routine and complex equipment care and maintenance. Demonstrates willingness to learn new techniques and use of new equipment.

    Documents routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.

    Implements appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as [CPAP or BiPAP or oxygen]).

    Teamwork


    Promotes a positive work environment and contributes to a dynamic team focused work unit that actively helps one another to achieve optimal department results.

    Communicates relevant information to other members of the healthcare team. Participates in solving team issues in a constructive manner.

    Quality


    Performs all procedures related to sleep studies including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration, etc.

    to ensure collection of appropriate data and in accordance with established protocols and policies and procedures. Accurately documents all patient care and polysomnography related activities and procedures in the appropriate documentation system. Identifies areas to be considered for improvement in the quality of service and participates in the quality improvement effort.

    Outcomes


    Scores sleep studies (including Home Sleep Studies) according to guidelines established by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and department policies and procedures.

    Prepares the preliminary detailed polysomnographic report for physician interpretation and completes the process for the final report once physician sign-off accomplished.

    Personal Education

    Participates in ongoing educational activities necessary to acquire and maintain competency. Maintains current CPR/BLS certification. Seeks opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies with a focus on continual development as a Polysomnographic Technologist.

    Demonstrates the ability to work without direct supervision in which tasks are accomplished in a timely manner.

    Demonstrates promptness in reporting to work and compliance with meal and break schedules. Completes tasks assigned to perform. Complies with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.

    Education of Others

    Educates patients in sleep study procedures, responding to questions and ensuring all paperwork and consent forms are completed. Serves as resources to co-workers, teaches, orients and mentors new and experienced Polysomnographic Technologists.

    Occasional carrying of equipment and compressors weighing up to 50 pounds.

    Occasional stooping/kneeling/crouching to work with equipment and provide patient care.

    Frequent reaching/handling/fingering/feeling to gain access to supplies, manipulate equipment and provide patient care.

    Constant talking/hearing/seeing to interact with other healthcare professionals and to provide patient care.

    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


    ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

    Location:
    Inside.

    Occasional exposure to chemical vapors.

    Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts of equipment.

    Occasional exposure to explosives when working with pressurized gases.


    Pay Range:
    $29.03-$45.19 Hourly
