Metriport is an open-source data intelligence platform that helps healthcare organizations access and exchange patient data in real-time. We integrate with all major US healthcare IT systems and tap into comprehensive medical data for 300+ million individuals.

We've found product-market fit with multi-million ARR, 100+ customers , backing from top VCs, and years of runway. We're ready to scale. We're a tight-knit, high-performing team of mostly former founders. We're engineering-heavy, operate with minimal bureaucracy and high autonomy, and hire based on competence, not prestige. Our team loves what we do, so we push hard—founders work six days a week from our SF office—but everyone has the freedom to craft their schedule. The Role

The General Counsel plays a critical, hands-on role in managing a broad spectrum of legal, regulatory, and compliance matters in close collaboration with the executive team. You will own customer and vendor contracting, licensing, regulatory and compliance, data privacy, and related strategic initiatives. You'll build our legal function from the ground up – no project too small or large.

Impact and Challenge

You will be working with some of the most sensitive data in any industry, governed by the strictest regulatory frameworks (including HIPAA, HITECH, and various state privacy laws). This work directly protects real people while simultaneously enabling the crucial data access that saves lives. You'll lead Metriport in navigating complex healthcare regulations at scale – delicately balancing strict compliance with speed and innovation that protects millions of individuals.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct legal reviews of new business models, programs, and partnerships to ensure compliance with healthcare regulations.
Provide counsel on data privacy and HIPAA compliance across all platforms and services.
Own customer and vendor contracting efforts end to end. Build playbooks to enable other departments to execute on your legal guidance.
Support corporate governance initiatives, internal policy development, and entity management.
Advise on employment matters and vendor/contractor relationships as needed.
Offer strategic guidance on operational models and navigate federal and state regulations governing pharmacy and physician dispensing.
Perform legal research to enable Metriport to promptly evolve with healthcare regulations and digital health law, including leading internal training sessions and policy development on compliance and legal best practices.

Qualifications

Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active California State Bar membership with at least 5 years of practice experience.
Proven expertise in drafting, negotiating, and advising on diverse commercial agreements, with sharp instincts for spotting and analyzing critical legal issues.
Thrives in ambiguity and fast-moving environments, meeting tight deadlines with flexibility and composure.
Deep familiarity with U.S. privacy frameworks—including HIPAA, GDPR, and CCPA—is essential.
Three or more years of healthcare industry experience required. Healthcare startup experience is a plus.
Equally comfortable operating tactically and thinking strategically.
Exceptional organizational abilities and sound prioritization judgment.
Experience counseling on digital health products, service design, and AI/ML applications.
