    About the Position:

    Description

    The City of Roanoke is seeking a Specialized Probation Counselor to perform human support work in the care and direct intensive supervision, counseling and providing of therapeutic interventions to court involved adolescents and their families. The successful candidate will perform clinical diagnostic and court ordered assessments; initiate referrals to service providers and community resources to address the needs of clients and their families; develop treatment plans, objectives and methods of handling problems for youth and family; and consult with probation officers concerning needs of youth and family. Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or related field is required; Completion of all post-degree supervision for licensure is required. Two years of post-degree experience providing counseling services to youth and families is preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) designation and a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.

    Examples of Duties

    SUMMARY

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    Conducts family, individual and group counseling sessions.

    Provides therapeutic interventions for high risk adolescents and their families.

    Performs clinical diagnostic and court ordered assessments.

    Makes service recommendations to court and probation staff to address needs of clients and their families.

    Collaborates with service providers as needed to facilitate successful outcomes for clients and families.

    Initiates referrals to service providers and community resources to address the needs of clients and their families.

    Develops treatment plans, objectives and methods of handling problems for youth and family.

    Prepares progress evaluations and recommendation reports; provides testimony in court as required.

    Consults with probation officers concerning needs of youth and family.

    Maintains case records, equipment, inventories, and compiles statistical data

    Provides in-services for staff assigned to the CSU as needed.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
    This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
    Master's Degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or related field of study is required. Completion of all post-degree supervision for licensure is required. Prefer at least two years of post-degree experience providing counseling services to youth and families.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS
    Ability to read and interpret documents such as laws, policies, regulations, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to respond effectively to inquiries orally and in writing. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

    REASONING ABILITY
    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
    Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) designation is required.
