    Job Description

    PURPOSE OF POSITION:

    The Staff Nurse in MICU/CCU, SICU is a nursing practitioner who contributes to the development, implementation and evaluation of the nursing regimen for assigned patients on his/her unit. Under the direction and leadership of the Head Nurse and Associate Director of Nursing (ADON), the Staff Nurse is guided by a thorough knowledge of nursing theory, principles and standards of quality nursing care.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. Participates in receiving of reports and walking rounds.
    2. Count narcotics with on-coming nurse and outgoing Tour Nurse Counter signed with initials.
    3. Perfom1s special assignments given by HN/designee which includes checking and documentation of the:
    a) Code cart includes defibrillator
    b) Accucheck
    c) Food refrigerator temperature
    d) Environment temperature
    4. Complete performance assessment of patients assigned.
    5. Checks doctors order, administers medications and document.
    6. Assists in serving patient meals and in feeding patients.
    7. Renders bedside care to assigned patients.
    8. Ensures patients are turned/position changed and placed out of bed or chair as ordered.
    9. Assists MD in procedures.
    10. Continuous monitoring of patient and reassessment of patient's condition.
    11. Performs treatments and procedures as ordered/indicated to patients and document response.
    12. Provides care for patients on ventilators and other lifesaving equipment/gadgets.
    13. Perfo1ms admission discharge and/or transfer of patients.
    14. Ensures clean and safe bedside environment for the patient.
    15. Takes part in and advocates patient/significant other teaching and discharge planning.
    16. Refers problems encountered on unit to HN/designee for further assessment.
    17. Venipuncture/ initiating intravenous therapy.
    18. Administration of the IV push/IV bolus and IV incorporation.
    19. Hanging Blood, plasma and blood derivatives. (Note: First unit of blood must be done w/MD20.
    20. Passing Irrigating nasogastric tubes.

    Minimum Qualifications
    1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
    2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
    Special Note:
    For assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
