    The Department of Physiology, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta University invites applications for a non-tenure track research position as an Assistant Research Scientist.

    The successful candidate will join a NIH-funded project (PI, Dr. Philip O'Herron) to investigate questions of neurovascular coupling.


    The Department of Physiology focuses on questions of cellular signaling, neural regulation and hormonal control in a broad range of whole animal, organ and cellular model systems of cardiovascular, endocrine and renal disease.

    There is a strong institutional commitment to core facilities, graduate programs and an interdisciplinary approach that promotes collaborations both within and across departmental lines.

    Responsibilities

    Research - 70%

    Determine how proper neuronal activity depends on functional hyperemia using state-of-the-art optogenetic and microscopic imaging (two-photon) techniques to control and measure blood flow and monitor neuronal activity, tissue oxygen, and other metabolic substrates


    Relevant background experience includes:

    sensory encoding in neurons, neurovascular coupling, neurometabolism, glia-neuron interactions, cerebral blood flow, and techniques including two-photon imaging, in vivo electrophysiology, rodent handling/surgery, and Matlab coding.


    Participate in project planning and development of research protocols and carry out experiments while ensuring adherence to accepted scientific principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines and analyze results of experiments.

    Administrative - 10%

    Carry out assigned duties for maintaining supply of inventories (place orders, track orders). Assist and train other lab personnel and students, as directed by the PI.

    Scholarship - 5%

    Publish 1-2 first author papers a year. Present research findings at 1-2 national or local scientific meetings.

    Deliver a lecture, seminar or facilitate small group sessions/journal clubs.

    Research Development - 15%

    Work toward the submission and attainment of extramural grants on independent research topics.

    Required Qualifications

    PhD in biomedical sciences, or equivalent doctoral degree, with postdoctoral training is required.


    Final candidates will be required to provide proof of completed academic degree(s) as well as post-secondary coursework in the form of original transcript(s).

    Those candidates trained by a foreign institution will also be required to provide an educational/credential evaluation.

    Previous experience in a research laboratory.

    Shift/Salary/Benefits

    This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.

    The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.
