    The Wikimedia Foundation is excited to invite applications for the position of Lead Software Engineer. In this pivotal role, you will report to the Senior Engineering Manager and play a crucial role in shaping our long-term engineering strategy alongside our product team. Your work will be instrumental in innovating, building, and maintaining Wikimedia's data feeds for high-volume reusers.

    Wikimedia Enterprise is a dynamic, revenue-generating product that delivers fast, comprehensive, reliable, and secure data ingestion for organizations seeking to repurpose Wikimedia content in third-party settings. Our goal is to enhance the reader experience, expand reach and discoverability of Wikimedia content, and improve attribution and verifiability by those who reuse our information.

    Your Responsibilities Include:

    • Leveraging your creativity to optimize our current infrastructure.
    • Contributing to the strategic planning of our future technical roadmap.
    • Enhancing the reliability of our widely utilized commercial data feeds.
    • Supporting new code and feature deployments.
    • Troubleshooting, debugging, and resolving issues in our application stack.
    • Assisting in the architectural design of new services that operate at scale.
    • Responding to incidents and diagnosing issues across Wikimedia Enterprises' production infrastructure.
    • Embodying and promoting our values in daily work.

    Required Skills and Experience:

    • Ability to thrive in a semi-ambiguous, startup-like environment.
    • Experience supporting complex web applications on AWS or similar cloud platforms.
    • Familiarity with Kafka or similar distributed event processing systems.
    • Experience with and Go applications.
    • Proficiency in configuration management and orchestration tools (ECS, Kubernetes) and modern observability infrastructure.
    • A knack for automation and task streamlining.
    • Competence in shell and scripting languages relevant to SRE/Operations engineering (e.g., Python, Go, Bash, Ruby).
    • Strong foundation in Linux/Unix fundamentals and debugging skills.
    • Fluency in English with the ability to work independently and effectively within a globally distributed team.
    • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

    Desirable Qualities:

    • A proven track record of open-source contributions.
    • Experience with non-cloud hosted infrastructure.
    • Startup experience is an advantage.
    • Previous remote work experience with a distributed team.

    Additionally, we would love you to have:

    • Proficiency in languages other than English.
