    The City of Sidney is currently offering a Civil Service Examination for Firefighter/Paramedic.

    Salary range:
    $63,125 to $80,566


    Firefighters are responsible for the protection of lives and preservation of property, through the delivery of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), firefighting, technical rescue, Haz-mat, fire prevention and other related services.


    Nature and Scope:
    The firefighter/EMT/Paramedic position is located in the Fire Group, Operation Division. THe division consists of 26 firefighters/EMT/Paramedics, 3 Lieutenants, 3 Assistant Chiefs. Firefighters report to Lieutenant or Assistant Chief serving as shift commander.

    Senior Firefighters/EMT/Paramedic's may serve as supervisors when there is no officer on duty or at the scene of an emergency incident.

    Firefighter/EMT/Paramedic Certification may also assume supervisory responsibilities at EMS calls.

    During routine station duties and some emergency situations the incumbent may have to work with little or no direct supervision.

    The Firefighter/EMT/Paramedic works closely with the Police Department in responding to emergency calls. THe incumbent will often work with hospital emergency room staff and other local emergency service organizations.

    The major responsibilities of Firefighter/EMT/Paramedic's include:


    • Rescuing endangered occupants from burning buildings, extinguishing fires, preventing fire spread and preserving property through fire attack, salvage, ventilation and overhaul techniques.
    • Hazardous materials mitigation, within the scope of their training.
    • Fast water rescue operations using specialized techniques and equipment to remove victims from swift moving current, within the scope of their training
    • Daily inspection, maintenance and cleaning of department apparatus and equipment.
    • Trench rescue operations, which utilize specialized rescue techniques and equipment to remove victims from excavation, site cave-ins.
    • Delivering of Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support medical services.
    • Extrication operations which utilize special rescue techniques and equipment to remove victims trapped in industrial and farm equipment, automobile accidents, confined spaces and other situations.
    • Continuous in-service and advanced training to maintain and upgrade skills and proficiency for service delivery.
    • Assisting the Fire Prevention Bureau in inspections, tests and educational programs. Conduct public tours of the Fire and Emergency Services Department facilities.
    • Conducting pre-plan fire inspections to familiarize members with the various commercial, institutional and industrial facilities and operations within our fire district.
    • Daily cleaning and maintenance of fire station facilities.
    • Rope rescue operations, which utilize specialized rescue techniques and equipment to remove victims above or below grade, within the scope of their training.

    Qualifications:

    • Successfully pass Civil Service Entrance Examination and selection process, which includes, interviews, background inquiries, physical examination, polygraph testing and psychological profile.

    • Must be able to obtain and maintain Fire Fighter Level II and an EMT P certification.
    • All new Firefighters hired after January 1, 2017, shall be required to obtain certification as a Paramedic within 36 months of the date of employment and shall be required to maintain this certification for the length of their career with the City.

    • Ability to operate fire pumps, aerial devices, power tools, and other specialized equipment.
    • The ability to drive emergency vehicles.
    • Must be able to work outdoors, year around, in all weather conditions for extended periods of time.
    • Ability to generate and maintain accurate reports and preplan information.
    • Physically able to perform work functions as established in the Physical Capabilities and Medical Examination.
    • Ability to make life and death decisions in extremely short periods of time under emergency conditions.
