    This position is for the Shielding and Ship Fabrication group in Department E83, the Reactor Plant Planning Yard for Nimitz Class aircraft carriers.

    The incumbent will be responsible for engineering project management and leadership of projects related to ship alterations, shipboard problem resolution, process improvements, and technical proposals.

    This position regularly communicates and collaborates with the Navy, NNL, and Maintenance Activities, and the incumbent will contribute to and lead project meetings.

    Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs.

    Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.
    Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
    Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

    Knowledge/experience with structural engineering topics such as Navy ship construction, reactor plant maintenance, military standards/specifications, welding requirements, lifting and handling gear, structural analysis, and coatings and corrosion is highly desirable.

    Experience with the use of software such as FEMAP, Microsoft Office, Access databases, Project, Teamcenter, and SharePoint is considered necessary.

    Candidates with accredited engineering degrees in the mechanical, structural, civil, aerospace, and nuclear fields will be considered for this position.
